Jackets are playing awful for the most part because of Arniel. His system doesn't really translate to the nhl, seeing as the offense is "shoot asap" and the defense is "do your best". He doesn't talk to the players on the bench during the games and I've heard that his practices are difficult to learn from. Most egregiously, it took him a 40 game streak where he had about 8 wins to decide he had to switch to a more defensive system. We're -24 goal differential in the third period alone, and a lot of it is doing the same mistakes multiple times in a row. Sure, we've had shitty goaltending but the goaltenders are being set up to fail behind a porous defense anyway. Aside from one player, who has credited his improvement to Vinny Prospal, everyone on the team has regressed.

Ironically, I'd still rather keep him for awhile longer rather than get someone competent like Carlyle and end up with a draft pick in the no man's land zone again.

I think it's more that they thought they had a franchise goalie in Mason and he has been pretty bad since his Calder Trophy season.

Also they have a lot of good young defensemen but they're still learning the game. Wouldn't be surprised to see some of them moved and flourish on more stable teams, being asked to do less.

29th?!? and were the 4th in PP opportunities. Its like teams dont give a fuck about taking penalties lol, and who blames them. Its like the whole evasion war tanking shit...war's dont evade anything, mobs just miss...similarly, no ones killing off penalties against the habs, the habs are killing off their own powerplay time.
