So I am amused that of all people Ovechkin felt the need to comment on Asham's antics. The man that pretended his stick was on fire after scoring a goal. Easy way to not have someone celebrate after knocking you the fuck out? Don't get knocked the fuck out.

Shocking to see a player admit the fight he provoked was classless. Kudos to Asham. I hate when goons start a fight after a clean check.

The hit was high. It was a fourth line schmuck hitting one of the Penguins star players. Beagle is lucky it was Asham and not Engelland or MacIntyre. Otherwise he might be dead.

The original check was clean and not that hard, Letang didn't see it coming and hit Beagle in the back into the boards after(again not too hard), then Beagle gave him a shove and his hand slipped up into his face. That was hardly worth a fight imo, no worse then a face wash. Also, if you are going to pick a fight, do it with a fighter unless it's a seriously bad hit. Both Chimera and Hendricks were on the ice, who are both usually willing to fight people and know how to fight.

None of it really matters though, the important thing was the Caps won and Beagle's face didn't break into 1000 pieces like DiPietro's would have. I'd just like to reiterate my point that it doesn't matter if the hit is clean or not, 4th line players shouldn't be hitting other teams star players without expecting to be fought - period. It doesn't matter if its a George Parros who can fight anyways or a Richard Park shrimp - you're a marginal, expendable player to your team and the league and you don't go potentially fucking up an all-star with a hit, legal or not. How'd you like it if the Pens matched up a defensive forward line (Cooke/Staal/Kennedy, for example) but switched out Kennedy for our enforcer or some other thug like Asham or even moved Engelland up to the wing and just kept dumping the puck into Green's corner so we could hit him over and over?

When Ovechkin hits Malkin when they had that unofficial feud, its whatev - they're both on the same level. When Malkin fought Rick Nash, its whatev. When Curtis Glencross starts hitting Malkin, problem.

I guess your team doesn't protect your star players, but I guess thats why your team doesn't have heart, unity, identity, or a stanley cup final appearance....

Honestly, that has been a problem the last few years. You shouldnt have to answer with a fight anytime someone hits a start play with a clean hit.

Get in their face, push em around, or go back and low a clean hit on their star player. Starting a fight with someone because they are doing their job and playing hockey is just dumb.

I partly agree, but when you're on the ice it can be hard to tell if the hit was clean or not when it happened at full speed and you may have not even been directly looking at it, if all you know is that some scrub player might have just hurt your top-liner, you go after them. As much as I don't like the flow of the game getting fucked up because some guy is retaliating for a clean hit, the players don't get to see 50 replays from 10 different angles to know the hit was clean at the time.

Ok well just remember you said that when Kopitar is left to defend himself and a chippy slashing back-and-forth staredown gets Kopitar's nose broken in his own fight or a slash misses his shin pads or stick and breaks his wrist. Or Clowe catches one of your wingers with their head down while turning up ice. Shit happens. Gotta defend your own.

You wanna see how a real TEAM acts? Watch Michael Haley try to go fight Brent Johnson. Eric Godard, team enforcer, leaps off the bench - taking an automatic 10 game suspension - and sprints as fast as his unagile legs can stride to take out Haley to protect a team's BACK UP goalie. And Dan Bylsma doesn't even get pissed over it - even though it lands him a fine for being the responsible coach.

The NHL can get as pissed as it wants and act like Eric Godard was in the wrong and people on the opposite side of the fence can say enforcers aren't necessary, but what Eric Godard did last spring was EXACTLY him fulfilling his duties 110% for the reasons he was brought on. There's 6 fucking pairs of muscular, prime of their life athletes on the ice with shoulder and elbow pads as hard as titanium, sticks bigger than baseball bats, and skates that - while its never been done intentionally, one must always not given mankind too much credit - can slit throats.... and yet the NHL expects 4 elderly, non-muscular men to keep those 6 pairs apart.

Brown is a big hitter but also a clean hitter. Very rarely has any of his hits been questionable or dirty and fans are always calling for Browns head because "if he can lay out big hits like that, he needs to be able to drop the gloves too"

I get answering for what you do, but I don't that means you should have to be expected to fight because of it.

Honestly, the Kings do a good job of taking care of their own. It was a major problem we had about 3 years ago, which was high lighted when Malkin took a cheap shot to Simmonds head with his elbow and none of the players even got in his face for doing it.

I just dont like the whole idea of "only a start player should be allowed to hit another star player"

That's the dumbest shit I have ever heard. 3rd and 4th line players can't hit 1st line players legally without expecting to get in a fight? and you actually said that and then mentioned Cooke's line in your post, ROFL. Talk about one of the most worthless players who constantly does dirty shit to players way above his skill level.

It's a contact sport, be prepared to get hit, keep your head on a swivel every shift, don't underestimate players based on their line, work hard every shift, etcetc. 90% of the fourth lines out there are supposed to play against and hit the shit out of star players, that's their job. If it's a dirty hit or some guy being a faggot like Avery, fine but not a normal hit in the flow of the game, on a guy who has the puck or is next to it. Asham wanted to spark his team because they were losing and he picked on a guy who was in the AHL most of last year and isn't a fighter, way to be a man.

and yea, the Caps don't need to protect their stars from weak hits like that, Ovie would have found a chance to check the guy back and twice as hard.

Kinda invalid since I said, its dumb to see players have to be accountable and get into a fight after a clean, good, hockey hit. Malkins elbow to Simmonds head was none of those.

Why does one have to wait for the other team to cross the line? If Beagle had injured Letang, punching him out wouldn't bring Letang back from IR any quicker. You don't even let the other team get any ideas. Be proactive, not reactive.

If I was the bouncer (enforcer) at a bake sale (hockey game) and the goodies (star players) were layed out on a table and I said don't you dare think of taking a bite of one of them (injuring them), I wouldn't wait til you grabbed one and shoved it in your mouth, cause either way the cookie would be gone at that point. I'd preemptively come over and smack your fucking hand and chest bump you angrily the instant I saw you leaning towards your wife, whispering into her ear, "look at those cookies, lets get some" as you point at the sweets I've been hired to guard.
