Shanahans explanation is reasonable.
All right Pens fans, lets hear it.

I don't agree with it at all, but I'd rather deal with Letang being suspended for two games than the hockey community cry about the Penguins getting special treatment etc. if Letang didn't get suspended. Burmistrov turned, and yeah Letang could have let up on the hit, no denying that, but he's playing the game at full speed, not watching slow motion frame-by-frame replays to analyze the situation and figure out what the best course of action is.
Fuck Rob Rossi.
There's certainly no defending the hit as it is boarding in it's simplest form. I think that Burmistrov knew what was coming and chose to turn away. Letang should have pulled up. It was a stupid play on his part and now the team is without it's top defenseman for two games.
Two sassagebonus games available tonight depending on what you guys would rather see before Hawks/Coyotes, so if you want a specific one on say something:
Pens/Wild or Flyers/Sens?
pens/Wild!
holy shit clutterbuck has the best overall hair situation ever going on
BJs get an early goal waved off, going to be that kind of year for them lol
Letang could've let up, but I still argue (and people have been arguing this for a couple years as the league gets sissier) that what the fuck do you expect a defenseman to do there? Especially on a guy with Burmistrov's speed - Shanahan admitted at the very least that Burmistrov stopped unexpectedly (although claims Burmistrov didn't turn at all). As a defenseman, you got to wipe that guy out every time because you don't want the play going the other way - suspensions be damned. You can't give a forward that lane between you and the wall when you're flat footed after a blocked point shot and Letang, correctly, didn't - by shoving him.
If Burmistrov's not a paperweight, Letang's shove doesn't have nearly as much force. If Burmistrov turns up ice and plays north-south, Letang shoves him into the wall but he goes sideways and is in no real physical danger.
And for Pens fans who know Letang's inability to hit a tractor trailer, if Letang could just get his fucking shot on net, the play never happens lol I don't want to quote NHL video game series like its a sage of hockey knowledge - but the commentary is right - "First job for a point shot: Miss the shin pads in front of you."
So Pens are missing Malkin/Crosby/Kennedy Orpik/Letang and Fleury has the night off on a back-to-back... what a freaking joke, our top D-pair, a top forward combination, and our #1 goalie all not playing tonight.
That was a tiny bump on the goalie but they waved it off and no penalty. Broadcasters said the refs have the option to just let the bump go and just wave off the goal without giving goalie interference.
The delay between bump and goal is way too much too.... one time the bump (which was so small the goalie stayed on his feet) preceeded the goal so much that when the replay went to show the penalty, the player was already past the goalie and in the corner turning back up along the half boards.
Or my favorite.... GETTING GOALTENDER INTERFERENCE ON YOURSELF AS THE PUCK CARRIER DRIVING THE NET.
This years pens is started to remind me of the early 2000's LA kings when Palffy, Deadmarsh, Allison where all out of the line up for awhile.
Lame. Ott was pushed into the goalie and got GI. Make up call?
Don't want to get all crazy here, but he could have taken a better angle and taken the lane away with his stick. I disagree with two games for this but it was an illegal hit, and more specifically a boarding which is top-tier in terms of types of plays that are in the disciplinary spotlight, for the time being that hit is going to be a suspension every time.
And not to get too nitpicky, but it wasn't a shove really, Letang carried him clear into the boards, his hands were in tight and he didn't push off so he could have just stopped himself to avoid finishing off the boarding.
