I've been wanting to get into this series but unsure if I should play the ps2 versions first then get 3 through dead souls.

The only prob with the first 2 is that they have extrmely anoying loadings also i think its 3 or4 has a recap on the story of the other games

3 has the recap, and was my starting point for the series. Starts off real fucking slow though, but once it gets rolling, boy does it keep on rolling....

Been playing it the past week, so full of god damn detail and craftsmanship in the two cities.

Is Dead Souls strictly a spin-off? Curious to give it a whirl, but I'm not sure if I should finish Yakuza 3 & 4 first before going for it.

If that's the case then I can pick up 3, 4, and Dead Souls for about $83 together.

Every sequel has had a recap of the games that came before it. With 2 & 3 it was something you could optionally do at the very beginning of the game. IIRC in 4 you could just access the recaps from the extras/options menu.

Dead Souls is a pure spinoff, an Alternate Universe Kamurocho with random characters from 2/3/4 making guest starring appearances. Given that the core storyline of the Yakuza games is the line of succession for the Tojo chairmanship, it's hard to believe any of this is canon.

It's a standalone title set in the Yakuza universe. That's about it. Easy indicator is that Ryuji Goda is expelled from the Omi Clan after losing to Kazuma Kiryu. He wasn't expelled in Yakuza 2 because he died after the fight. I haven't had a chance to really sit down and play it yet because of work. I'll be cracking this baby open on Thursday though.

This game is over the top amazing. Some of the substories are just great; one where people get attacked by cliches ending in an even bigger cliche; another where Majima keeps thinking he's killed one of his family's members that have turned into zombies.

And then there was Majima's karaoke. 'Let's Get to the Top' Mind blowing how ridiculous this was to play, having not seen the vid Correction posted a while back.

Kinda miss the Yakuza hand to hand combat, but this game's just as damn fun.

It's a Yakuza game, did you expect anything less lol. They are always awesome. Such a shame more people don't play this series.
