    PS3 RPG's?

So now that I'm employed and getting an HDTV tomorrow, it's time to finally get some games for my PS3. Went to Best Buy (have a gift card) to look at some games...and didn't see a single one I really wanted to get. Only saw 1-2 games that looked to be RPG's, and more american ones than JRPG. Western RPG's are ok, but JRPG is my preference. Anyone know some I can go look for? And any western RPG's that are really good are fine too. Nothing wrong with strategy games either (TO/FFT/Fire Emblem/etc.)

If you want JRPGs, grab anything by NIS, Atlus, or XSeed.

There's about 9000s deluxe box RPGs that those publishers have put out in the past two years. Ar Tonelico, Atelier Iris, Disgaea, etc

I suppose Heavy Rain I should pickup just because it was so widely acclaimed and stuff. Valkyria Chronicles from a review sounded pretty cool, I watched the anime and it wasn't that terrible (the setting/characters were fairly good at least) so I was looking into that. Never played a Disgaea though I keep hearing about it. Never heard about Resonance of Fate.

ME/Fallout aren't fantasy and while I'm sure they're good games, I'm looking for mostly fantasy because of the "usual" gameplay involved in those. Dragon Age was alright, in some ways better but in some ways much weaker than FF12 (I hated having to control every party member if I wanted to actually win at anything above normal).

Never heard of NIS or XSeed, but Atlus did TO, right? They make any TO-like games recently?

I had a blast with Valkyria Chronicles; wholeheartedly recommended.

I really enjoyed Nier, I know some people will disagree but I liked a lot of the puzzles and the combat was entertaining. Incredible score and the story wasn't about teenagers saving the world!

I was actually looking for Nier because I had seen a thread on it on BG a few months back. Best Buy did not have it out at all.

Looking at the Atlus site the only PS3 RPG they released anytime lately is Demon's Soul. And can't find it on Best Buy's website, lol, guess I'll swing by Gamestop tomorrow.

If you've played the AT series, be warned that AT3 is very disappointing. AT2 is still the best game out of the series despite some of its game stopping bugs.

Adding to those who said Nier & Valkyria.

Also, look into White Knight Chronicles II (it even includes WKC 1, so good value), 3D Dot Game Heroes, and Folklore.

If you like action RPGs that will kick your ass, pick up both Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. Start with Demon's first, though.

Also, don't judge Valkyria Chronicles based on the anime, that's a huge mistake cause the anime sucks compared to the game when it comes to characters. Alicia isn't some annoying tsundere and Welkin is actually a boss.

I second Demon's Souls and Dark Souls. 2 of the best RPGs on PS3. Somewhat of a western feel, but japanese made and awesome as fuck. Other than that, the only other RPGs I own on PS3 are Tales of Vesperia(JP obviously) and Valkyria Chronicles. Both I highly recommend.

Not technically a ps3 rpg, but always worth a replay, Chrono Trigger was just released on PSN this past Tuesday.

I only sort of got this vibe from the anime, so I figured that was the anime team making it like that and such.

Not sure what AT is from what someone mentioned above. I'm more into Strategy/RPG games than action RPG typically, but action/RPG is the way the RPGaming is going these days.

Girlfriend thought Folklore looked interesting yesterday too, guess I'll get that, Valkyria, Nier and Demon's Souls to start. Hmm, but maybe WKC2, since that looked interesting just not enough information on the box to be sure what the game was like.

And then there's the part where you do backfilps while throwing explosive presents at innocent children.

Almost totally. The things with Isara and Rosie are much better in the game, the whole relationship with Isara (and the darcsens) doesn't become annoying in the game unlike the anime.

I loved RoF, but the game play never really changes and once you figure it out (HOLY SHIT DO TUTORIALS) and it does get really easy later on. But it starts out pretty hard, and the escort mission will be one of the hardest things lol.

But I loved the characters and the cut scenes, always entertaining and the group has a great dynamic. Story is a bit weird, and takes a LONG time to get into, and after all that it isn't so good. If the game play and characters keep you entertained, then it's worth it.

Heavy Rain isn't really an "RPG" - it's more an aventure game/Dragon's Lair quicktime event type of thing. Interesting, but just not in that same vein.

IMO, you might want to consider Catherine. The scope of it is a lot more limited than an RPG, of course, but in some ways it's similar in that you've got "combat" (in form of the puzzle section) punctuated by conversations that you can use to steer the game towards one of the three basic end results (with 2-3 degrees of success for each).

'course, not PS3 exclusive. There is a demo though.

My only caveat about White Knight Chronicles 2, is that you do a lot of back tracking in the WKC2 story. It's great the first time through if you play the WKC1 story first, but after the introduction part in WKC2 you basically have to go from the last dungeon in the first story to the city of Greede, thats backtracking through like half of the first game. That and it gets extremely repetitive, there's not much diversity in the monsters, the giant monsters are supposed to break things up and become more interesting, but I found that they are just more of the same, but with more HP.

White Knight Chronicles isn't terrible, but just know what you are up against. There isn't a whole lot of quality JRPGs for PS3 this generation, I was really hoping that Tales of Vesperia would get a state-side PS3 port, but that plan fell through. I heard something about getting Tales of Graces F, and possibly Xillia so if you are willing to wait you can probably get your hands on those sometime next year. We're also getting Ni no Kuni which looks pretty damn awesome.

The problem with JRPGs, is that they are hard to find. Gamestop really only stocks whatever sells the best, so there's like 100s of copies of all the western games, like Fallout, Mass Effect, Dragon Age etc... I had a hard time trying to find any of the NIS or Atlus games around my location. You may have to order some of the games you're interested in on Amazon or some other online retailer. That's assuming that the game shops in your area are similar to mine.

Anyways good luck mate, hope you find that fantasy you are looking for.
