Surprised nobody has mention Oblivion, you might want to give it a try. RPGs have been rather lackluster this gen though, imo. I've yet to find anything impressive. FF13 was okay if you haven't already played that.

Seriously though play Mass Effect 2, its different but a incredibly amazing scifi RPG with 3rd person shooter gameplay. Theres also a lot of ps1 classics from the rpg golden era on the store FF7,8,9, Chrono trigger, Legend of mana.
Pretty sure no one mentioned Final Fantasy XIII. It can be hit or miss (like every FF). I personally loved the game. Ended up getting the platinum trophy in it (trophy obtained for completing obtaining every single trophy in the game).
I've played FFXIII (and loved it for the most part, as I've posted elsewhere many times) and own Oblivion (the leveling mechanic in this game is so stupid, my brother pre-ordered Skyrim so I'll make sure it's not as retarded before I get myself my own copy) though I might want to try an Elder Scrolls game on console, I think it might actually work better than on PC, which is how I played Oblivion.
So I went to Gamestop and got:
Valkyria Chronicles
Eternal Sonata
Demon's Soul
Uncharted/Mercenaries 2/Tomb Raider Underworld (all 3 for $30 and gf was interested in Uncharted)
They didn't have Nier, I didn't see a WKC2 there, not spending $60 on Catherine. If I like Demon's Souls I'll probably "have" to get Dark Souls since people will have moved on to that now, eh?
I am interested to see how Eternal Sonata goes since apparently it is multi-player, so I can play with my girlfriend, wonder how that'll work.
Just make sure to give Demon's Souls some time (ideally past the first boss), i literally had the game for months before even really getting into it because i couldnt get past the first area. But after i forced myself to get through it, i simply found it hard to stop playing afterwards; easily the best ps3 rpg in my opinion.
Not a ps3 title, but Breath of Fire 4 is on PSN. One of my favorite rpg's of the ps1 era, but don't think it was widely available at the time it came out.
Mostly all the same stuff that's been mentioned, Demon's/Dark Souls if you're up for a challenge, WKC2 has a lot, and I mean a lot of gameplay hours if you're playing from the start of 1 to the finish of 2. Eternal Sonata I was not a particular fan of, don't know why, I guess it just felt incredibly stale and archaic. Also, /v/ might blab on about it, but stay away from Atelier Rorona/Totori. I've played all the Atelier games, but idk what people see in those two. It's like playing a second job.
I wasn't a huge fan of Eternal Sonata, it felt really childish at the time, but I have to admit I didn't really play it for more than an hour. I also can't justify spending $60 on a glorified puzzle game even if it does have an awesome story.
Valkyria Chronicles is pretty awesome, but it's super boring at the beginning, give it some time.
good choices. I personally enjoyed eternal sonata, though the one guy annoyed me everytime he showed up. The one guy you fight. he has the same VA as Lelouch from code geass, the voice just, doesn't fit the characters appearence to me, other then that though, no real complaints. me and 2 friends played it through together. I don't have much to add as all my suggestions have already been mentioned.
Eternal Sonata is shit. You will have to probably get used to demon souls since its sort of overwhelming at first, its very good though.
Eternal Sonata is kind of like Star Ocean. Voices/Story is awful, gameplay (mostly combat) is pretty great. I remember having a pretty good time with it back when it came out. NG+ is pretty rage-inducingly difficult at times, which can also be refreshing for an RPG, if you ever play it that long
I'd say out of all of those, start playing Valkyria Chronicles first. It's the easiest one to get into and requires the least time investment to get some enjoyment out of, and you can always start doing the hard/expert mode missions if the regular game gets too easy/simple
But unlike Star Ocean, the combat isn't great. It's good, and depending on the character you play it's more or less fun (Viola is the only character I think is fun and really effective). Star Ocean IV is truly a game carried on game play.
Eternal Sonata has good points, beautiful graphics, good music and good game play but everything else is basically shit. Characters, story, pacing, cut scene animation (which is particularly terrible lol) are all pretty bad.
I can see the negative comments about Eternal Sonata, but it's one of the rare multi-player RPG's and the woman probably enjoys it a tad more than me (though we're both making fun of it). And I can see Valkyria being slow based off what I saw in the anime (you basically have one skirmish and then wait a bit to build story and get into war in the anime).
I stopped ES for a bit and turned on Demon's Souls. I really hope there's an aspect to the game I have not yet unlocked. Went through tutorial, got one shotted by the Vanguard dude, which seems like an expected outcome based on how well-developed the Nexus is (looks to be the central game hub?) But from what I'm seeing I basically have to keep trying through a dungeon, face a boss, and repeat? Or is there a level up stat-gaining aspect that doesn't unlock until after I complete one zone/archstone? I started as a thief, which I imagine is likely one the weaker choices for solo play (as it typically is) but I'd like to do Co-op or something down the line if I can figure out how that works and once I get stuff down on my own. How does Co-op work? Can you effectively have group play, or do other people only show up in some limited capacity...?
You need to beat the zone boss of 1-1 in order to unlock the other areas and the ability to increase your soul level. If you're having hard enough time that you're getting frustrated, there are plenty of video playthroughs on youtube that can really help. Also, starting as a class that can use magic (i.e. royalty) can really make the first zone a lot more manageable.
Can you change class later?
Nope.
Class only affects your starting stats & gear, everyone can wear/use everything, so long as you fit the stat requirements. Once you start getting a few levels (which you can get by talking to the girl in black in the nexus), you can pretty much build your character to be good at w/e you want.
DEX based characters are actually pretty good in Demons Souls, you just have to remember that in this game you have to be a little more versatile than in other RPGs. Even being a DEX based THF, you'll still want to switch between backstabbing, bows, a stronger 1H or 2H weapon (i.e. on things can't be backstabbed) and possibly magic, depending on the situation.
