We had to know for ourselves =\ We hath been trolled by Yoshi on that part really.
We actually haven't empirically confirmed the effect of breaking horns, because the sample size you'd need for confidence is beyond what anyone really wants to test. It was more like, "let's break horns every time", ten kills without drops, "fuck it, horns don't do shit", back to never breaking horns ever again. It could change the drop rate from 5% to 6%; we don't know, and we'd rather just get more kills in.
Personally I'm around 5/90 not counting duplicates, 7/90 with.
10 kills is ample size for testing purposes. I'm sure with combined effort here there could be a good 20-30 sample size. Which is more than enough to suggest that wasting time killing horns is not worth it, when we have gone runs where no horns were destroyed yet got 4 drops.
some ppl keep saying that the regen is significantly reduces when breaking horns, I could see this being the benefit of it since is regen is quite high and in phase 5 its pretty easy to zombie it with 4 mages and with some dash luck
I am saying it is a tactic that a shoddy group could employ, go for max safety and 4 mages 3 LNC 1 tank. Break the horns early, and if you survive till phase 5 you should be set. I could make the argument that "why would you ever take more then 1 mage" but for 99% of the groups doing ifrit that setup won't work even though its probably the most foolproof for our ls. "hello 3min. killz"
Or people should just learn the mechanics. Throwing mages at a it doesn't teach anything. Depending on the group it could cause more issues if all 4 mages die as well. Depends on where mages stand, if you have 2 pairs of mages grouped up and 1 dies in the path of where you run from eruption could turn out bad. I guess that falls into how you're dealing w/ it. Killing swifty for some groups might be better because they have less opportunities to fuck up.
I completely agree w/ having 1 mage is best tho!
2 mages seems to be the right balance between safety and speed. But I've not tried with one yet. 3 min kill is impressive.
Straight Plumes would actually be the best for DPS, but anyway:

(never mind the dubstep)
Well a 5 minute kill can be impressive too if he used a few of those triple charge moves. Speed really depends on the randomness of his attacks. But I noticed a few things in the video that shaves time off such as their handing of cracks and forcing Hellfire early in the nails phase.
I'm somewhere around 0/20 now while other people in my group have gotten 5-6 (Counting dupes). The level of bullshit is staggering.
I've yet to see a single weapon. Then a member joins in... his very first win: cane for his CON... his second win: harpoon for his LNC.
WHA DE FUG
Shit's random, don't stress. It took me about 50-60 kills before I got a usable weapon.
It seems entirely unrandom when you are on the no drops end.
