Pornography to be blocked by internet service providers unless users opt in

Subscribers to four of the UK's biggest internet service providers will have to "opt in" if they want to view sexually explicit websites, as part of government-sponsored curbs on online pornography.

The measures will be unveiled on Tuesday as David Cameron hosts No 10 meeting with the Mothers' Union, which earlier this year produced a raft of proposals to shield children from sexualised imagery.

The prime minister is expected to announce other moves in line with the Christian charity's review, such as restrictions on aggressive advertising campaigns and certain types of images on billboards.

There will also be a website, Parentport, which parents can use to complain about television programmes, advertisements, products or services which they believe are inappropriate for children.

The site, which will direct complaints to the regulator dealing with that specific area of concern, is expected to be run by watchdogs including the Advertising Standards Authority, BBC Trust, British Board of Film Classification, Ofcom, Press Complaints Commission, Video Standards Council and Pan European Game Information.

The service providers involved are BT, Sky, TalkTalk and Virgin. Customers who do not opt in to adult content will be unableto access pornographic websites.

Cameron gave strong backing in June to the Mothers' Union proposals after he commissioned a six-month review by the charity's chief executive, Reg Bailey. However, Cameron did not commit to legislation.

Bailey's recommendations included providing parents with one single website to make it easier to complain about any programme, advert, product or service, putting age restrictions on music videos and ensuring retailers offer age-appropriate clothes for children.

Cameron wrote to Bailey in June to thank him for his report. "I very much agree with the central approach you set out," the letter said.

"As you say, we should not try and wrap children up in cotton wool or simply throw our hands up and accept the world as it is. Instead, we should look to put 'the brakes on an unthinking drift towards ever-greater commercialisation and sexualisation'."

Bailey's report asked for government and business to work together on initiatives such as ending the sale of inappropriately "sexy" clothing for young children, for example underwired bras and T-shirts with suggestive slogans.

However, he recommended that if retailers do not make progress on the issue they should be forced to make the changes in 18 months.
I wonder if this include 4chang.

Fuck that noise. How about being a damn parent and putting restricted access on your pc when your kid logs in so that he can't access the sites instead of having the government regulate it.

Ugh, good idea, wrong execution. As a kid that easily got around parental settings on porn as a preteen, a server side block would have probably been the only thing that would have allowed my parents to actually enforce their parenting on me in this regards. It's fucking stupid to make porn "opt-in" (rather, you opt-out of the filter), rather than an opt-in program. Whoever the fuck thought of this was fucking stupid.

lol, you know that shit doesn't really stop that many kids. I wasn't even a nerd at that age and I still figured it out in a fairly short amount of time.

What? So, instead of streaming porn, little UK preteens will now have to download/torrent it from third-party websites to buried/hidden folders on their hard drives and/or trade physical copies via dvd/flash drive with people whose parents have opted in?

They seem to want to get their kids started on piracy early in the UK.

^that's the best argument I could see against an opt-in filter program, but like I said before, this opt-out crap is bullshit

I really, truly cannot express how sorry I feel for the poor bastard who have to take the calls for people who cant figure out how to turn the filter off.

I give it less than a decade before some database gets hacked to show all the 'pervs' who want to see nudes.

So what should they do to get what they want?

Edit: I mean what would be the best alternative to the opt-in program since that only promotes piracy.

This would be my biggest concern with this move if I lived in the UK. I don't want to think about how that phone to opt-in must go either. Imagine the Taj FFXIApp list on a nation-wide scale. The fallout would be horrendous.

Edit: @Yugl, Personally? I'd just leave it to the parents to be smarter than their bloody preteen. Most adolescents don't actually know how to "hack" anything, their parents just put extremely simple passwords on whatever parental controls they bother to implement and never change them. Most of the "circumvention" I saw back in high school consisted of learning one of the administrator passwords and using that on everything.

If the government really felt the need to get involved, I think they'd benefit more from educating the parents in contemporary technology so that they can effectively stand up to their naturally resourceful offspring rather than throwing another ineffective stopgap at the supposed problem. You'd be hard-pressed to find a smartphone or ipod these days without at least one piece of porn on it.

I highly doubt that would have stopped you.

If the kids are half as dumb as I was going through puberty, they'll just jerk off to HBO or something.

More people need to get fetishes that don't even get age-restricted by YouTube. Then you never have to deal with things like this.

I had porno mags by age 14 when I was a kid, back before internet porn exploded. and I was a nerd who really didn't have a lot of friends.

    this won't stop anything.

What's so bad about porn anyhow. I could see maybe stopping a 9 year old or something but if they are at an age to google "boobs" could it be that bad? I mean how many of us have not been exposed to porn before our 18th birthday? I don't see anything negative happening from it unless you get into the real kinky shit or its excessive. Hell, even some countries like japan accept nudity as a natural thing and don't make attempts to hide it.

    Stupid idea still.

    ALL HAIL SNEAKERNET!

Seriously, why is it almost everyone that crosses their mid-twenties forgets the irresistible force that is the teenage horny. There is nothing that can be done to quash it, and the sooner parents and politicians remember their youth and get the fuck over it, the sooner we can move the hell on.

Because japan was probably the worst country to fit his analogy.

b/c it's illegal. He wasn't referring to porn but the idea of nudity in society.

Also yes this gov idea is stupid.

Nudity and sex is fine, imo. It's the hardcore and fetish stuff that I would want to keep my kids (god forbid I have) away from until they are 16-18+. No reason for them to be ashamed of their bodies, but no reason for them to be hyper-sexualized either
