The DeLorean is Back and It's Electrifying
    ARTICLE DATE : October 17, 2011
    By Damon Poeter

The DeLorean is back, baby. And while it may not have a flux capacitor like the iconic DMC-12 featured as the time machine in the Back to the Future franchise, the comeback version being built by the Humble, Tex.-based DeLorean Motor Company (DMC) in collaboration with startup Epic EV does have an electric battery built by a company called Flux Power.

That's right, the brand new DMCEV is an all-electric ride.

DeLorean and Epic EV (short for Electric Vehicles) plan to have the electric sports car in production by 2013, according to Jalopnik's Kevin McCauley, who recently went for a spin in "version 0.9" of the vehicle with DMC president Stephen Wynn.

The DMCEV prototype was unveiled at International DeLorean Owners Event in Houston, Tex. last weekend. DMC, which apparently has loads of old DeLorean parts laying around, has been spending the last few years building new models of the short-lived but iconic American sports car to order, using about four parts of old gear to one part new engine and suspension tech to do it.

Now, perhaps with all the hoopla surrounding Tesla and other electric car companies, it seems that DMC is getting more ambitious. Jalopnik's McCauley reports that the builders haven't released any DMCEV specs yet (though they do promise 0-to-60 mph in 4.9 seconds), but notes that "if it's anything like Epic EV's Torq Roadster, it'll get a 200 hp+, 44V/156V electric motor, powered by a 24-30 KWh lithium ion phosphate battery."

Moving on to the ride itself, McCauley describes the resistance of the gas pedal to be like "like a piece of gym equipment," combining with "firm, weighty steering" to make the DMCEV "true to form with any 1980s exotic." The car is weighty, particularly with 200 pounds of weight added by the electrical system, according to McCauley, yet coming out of a turn it has "more than enough torque to overcome its heft," while smart battery positioning "also helps improve on the rear-biased 35-percent/65-percent weight distribution of the standard DeLorean."

As for extras and generally cool stuff, the DMCEV has an integrated iPhone dock inside and a hinged grille in the front that opens up to reveal the charging port, according to Jalopnik.

DMC has apparently not set a specific release date or talked up price as of yet.

Yeah, but if you had ever driven one, and you went to 88 miles per hour, you would have seen some serious shit.

The first ones built were absolute pieces of dogshit, hopefully they'll have better build quality this time around.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

I like how they're saying 'they're back'.... when DMC has been selling them still the entire time. Website link. Expensive as all getout though.

Edit: Hmm, website has changed, guess they're getting ready for this merger/prototype concept thingy.
