While I agree and understand this, I just thought part of the reasoning we gave was because of the harsh images of the Bin Laden footage. It was too gruesome to be aired or shown but our major news outlets have shown pictures and videos of a bloodied Gadhafi etc.

It wasn't the media's choice not to air gruesome images. If they had images to air, they'd have aired it. The "we" you speak of is the government, not the media. And in the case of Gadhafi, the US government had no control over the images.

The blowback analysts at the DoD and Commanders take into account has almost nothing to do with more planes flying into buildings or the next 4 year old who becomes a terrorist for our childrens 20 years from now.

They're worried that posting a cartoon of Mohammad, a picture of UBL dead, regular citizens in the US "protesting" the Mosque at the WTC site - they're worried that all of these things will have immediate impact on their troops in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as on the local populace in Iraq and Afghanistan. They aren't worried about some imaginative point in the future that another bad thing happens but that proven correlations between stupid shit people do and shit happening to people they are in charge of.

I know we want to think the government bad, but a lot of shit happens to protect soldiers overseas and that includes but is not limited to the withholding of information lots of people think they need to know but really don't.

I'm not quite sure what Meko and Elvis are trying to get at... We didn't release pictures/video of Osama dead because we didn't want the retaliatory attacks to be any worse? Think about it. Someone just killed your leader, you're upset, yes, you're going to want revenge. Now, they just killed your leader and are parading around spreading pictures of your dead leader. Which would you be more pissed about? It only needed to be a "we got him", it didn't need to be "we got him now here are some pictures." The idea that these pictures of Osama bin Laden dead would put our troops in danger is a fucking joke. It's superfluous. They already ARE in danger. They will continue to be in danger. Our policies radicalize people enough as it is.

What the government might be genuinely worried about are spikes in violence but it's all the same. After the case where those US soldiers gang-raped a 14-year old Iraqi girl, there were reprisals.
