number one rule of roommates is make sure none of them own a cat. cats will ruin your shit if you let your guard down for even a brief moment
Division of rent and bills is something you should have in writing.
Don't steal your goddamn roommate's food. Don't let him steal yours either.
This rule applies also to toothpaste.
Feel free to invest in a small lock for your door. Don't keep cash unless its a piggy bank or something.
Don't leave anything out in your communal areas that you do not want used, moved, abused or thrown away.
Don't encourage activity happening in your communal areas that you wouldn't like happening in your bedroom.
Invest in whiteboards - they are good ways to communicate to each other, particularly when it comes to bills - due dates and amounts owed.
My household denotes on a whiteboard how much each bill was every month, how much each person owes, and additionally - keeps a tally of how much each person owes in total.
Don't write passive-aggressive bullshit on the whiteboards, be direct.
^This so much, I don't know how many times I've been so pissed off at roommates for eating my food. Maybe want to be a bit OCD and put labels on your food if it becomes a problem.
Also, if said roommate makes a mess somewhere, make sure he/she cleans up after himself. I had a chick roommate that used one of those bath bombs in the tub with rose pedals and shit one afternoon, and I had to shower in the leftover gunk the next morning before work because she didn't clean it. If that doesn't work out, set up a schedule for cleaning up shit and make sure people stick with it.
Then again, I've had bad experiences with roommates (except for one or two), so I might be slightly biased.
double, my bad
I like seeing topics about people moving to/near Portland. You'll love it.
As far as room mates, there are a shit tonne of people on craigslist all the time looking to room with others. There are 2 universities here so lots of young people looking for a place to crash. Just make sure you interview them like they are applying for a job as your personal accountant. You want to make sure they are trustworthy and likable. All the minor shit like cleanliness and living habits can be worked out with anyone that is half way reasonable.
Enjoy Portland! Message me if you need any protips!
how do you keep your food apart from theirs, and how do you tell whose produce is whose? I lived with roommates for most of my post-childhood life and all food was considered communal, we would cook for each other, etc. it might be smart to get a small cheap fridge to keep in your room if you're so afraid of losing food.
at my house we all use different shelf space and portions of the fridge. it really shouldnt be that hard to tell your sack of apples from someone elses if your sack is on the top shelf and theirs is in a drawer or bottom shelf or door or on the counter for those that dont refrigerate fruit.
In my house, it wasn't the roommates that were the main problem, but the roommates friends. They would come over and dig through the fridge for something to eat and not respect food rules etc. But I mean who the fuck honestly goes over to someone elses house and goes through their fridge? I couldn't think of an instance where that would cross my mind as an okay idea.
Stay the fuck away from anyone who shows signs of drug (any kind) use and don't let your roomates' friends ever sleep at your place, especially if you're told that it would be "only for one night" because you can be sure as hell it won't.
This, god, this pissed me off. Who the fuck raises these people? I also had roommates who would leave the main door open all night so their friends could come in and out as they pleased. (Luckily, the door to my bedroom had its own lock.)
My recommendation as far as roommates: DON'T DO IT. Honestly, save yourself the headache and get your own place. I have never once lived with someone who I didn't want to shoot within a week of living together.
Banging all night, stealing shit from you, leech mode for financial support, psycho bitches, etc.
Nothing good comes out of roomies, prepare your anus.
800/mo is a over my budget so i gotsta pass on DC. woulda been sweet though. plus a train/bus ticket there are both like $2-300 and i dont have a passport so a plane ticket can blow me. its only temporary until i save enough for my own glorious gaming+musical studio hybrid
portland is amazing. it's like a city+the woods at the same time. it didnt even make sense to my brain. i live in the valley in CA, not too far from LA, and i can still remember getting to the first part of Norcal and being like....wtf its so green....wtf why is this making me so happy...why is none of this grass dead??? the air is clean. why are all of these people sharing and respecting each other's road space? bear crossing signs?! 30 foot line for doughnuts????
sunrise in portland was like purple and blue. purple sunrise. PURPLE SUNRISE.
gonna hunt down craigslist. idc about food because i can make enough for a minifridge, all i eat are sandwiches+fruit+salads and shit that has to be cooked which is hard to leech w/o work so most people avoid it.
