    Another Comcast headache...

Yesterday my service dropped for about 3 hours. No area interruption or anything else odd. I call Comcast and they try resetting my router but are unable to reach it. Looking further into my account they noticed 4 different occasions of my modem being unable to communicate this week. They advised me to go to my local Comcast office and get a new modem from them which I'm going to do today.

I'm a bit relieved but concerned and this is why. Since switching from at&t dsl to comcast I've noticed a decrease in speed and connectivity. Now granted it's eyeballing but it's obvious. Constant page loading failures. Download speeds terrible with at times failing completely. And there have been a few times where they did have "area outage" randomly. It's not just me or my desktop. It's my wife and her laptop as well. With at&t dsl we never had any of these issues. The only reason we switched was because we moved and they didn't offer the $15/month in my new area. U-verse is more expensive then comcast and the dsl modem isn't compatible with U-verse.

I thought it was maybe my desktop so I've done the virus cleanup suggested here numerous times on both laptop and desktop and nothing was found. The way I actually noticed was how ffxi started running a ton slower when we first got Comcast. What happens constantly, is characters will be moving, stop, then go flying across the screen. Constantly happens with the Galka that paces in P. Jeuno. On my desktop I can turn down all setting and set graphics to Atari-mode and it doesn't change anything. This never once happened with the at&t dsl.

My question is, what should I do from this point on to make sure I'm getting the service I paid for and also to ensure this isn't a problem on Comcast's end? I remember a thread similar to this before where someone constantly had comcast go to their neighborhood and finally they admitted it was on their end. Something about node?

Hi. That thread you were talking about was mine.

If you are worried you are not getting the service you paid for, call them and tell them. Run Speedtest.net and see what your speed is. If you think that it really is a problem on their end, they will listen and probably just credit you for however long your service isn't up to par.

just got done exchanging modem and checking with speedtest.net. My speed checks with the package I have. I didn't know they had dropped my internet service to the economy package when I signed up for tv to give me the pricing I wanted. We'll see if my net drops at all. Nelta, would you mind PMing me a link to your thread?

Make sure when you are testing your connection with Speedtest you arn't connected through a router. PC -> Modem only.

When you were having all these problems, were you using a router or just straight connection to the modem?

Just as a sidenote, the equipment people rent from comcast (modems ect.) aren't exactly the best. On multiple occasions Ive seen speed/connectivity issues fixed by purchasing a new modem.
