The digital issue of December's Game Informer is out now, and with it comes a boatload of new information on Grand Theft Auto V, including the fact that its world will be bigger than the worlds of Red Dead Redemption, San Andreas, and Grand Theft Auto IV combined (at least according to Rockstar).
Holy crap.
You should read Game Informer for the full look, but here are a few big details we've learned from the magazine's latest cover story:
According to Rockstar, Grand Theft Auto V's Los Santos is bigger than Red Dead Redemption, San Andreas, and Grand Theft Auto IV combined. Yep. There's wilderness, a military base, and even an ocean floor to explore underwater.
You can switch between the game's three main protagonists at "nearly any time."
Those three protagonists, by the way, are named Michael, Trevor, and Franklin. Michael is a retired bank robber who gets sucked back into crime; Trevor is a career criminal and drug addict; Franklin is a 20-something street hustler.
Sometimes they'll work together on missions, during which you can switch back and forth from character to character depending on which part of a given mission you feel like doing.
Each character has his own personality, skill set, and group of friends to interact with. And the ones you're not controlling will go off and do their own thing.
This is the same world as Grand Theft Auto IV and Liberty City, so you might see some recurring characters from those games (just not the major ones, like Niko Bellic). But. Rockstar says this is the "high-definition" world of Grand Theft Auto, so don't expect to see anyone from the PS2-era titles.
Remember those randomized dynamic missions in Red Dead Redemption? They're back for GTAV: expect hitchhikers, muggers, and dead bodies, among others.
Yes friendships. No romance.
Rockstar says there will be an economy, but you won't be able to buy properties. There will be "loads of other stuff."
You can get the digital copy of this month's Game Informer online right now. The dead-tree edition should be out within the next week or so.
As for Grand Theft Auto V, we can expect the game spring 2013 for Xbox 360 and PS3.

Wont be up forever as I regularly delete my public folder.
For those wondering its the informer scans
Damn, I wasn't really following GTA5, but it's sounding pretty good so far. Really hope they up the variety with dynamic events. I wonder if the proposed map size also means more indoor environments.
It looks huge, looking out the back of Vinewood.
I was going to say that this is probably the case, otherwise it would have close to 50 square miles of map (13.8 San Andreas, 6.8 GTA 4, and 28 Red Dead). But then I learned that Just Cause 2 had 400, so I don't know. Since it will have flying in it, depending on how high they let you go, that will shorten up the map quite a bit. I think JC2 let you go 4 miles up. If you can go that high in GTA5 it's really only 12 ish miles long.
Kinda wish they held this back for next-gen platforms/PC.
As much as I love me GTA, I can't stand the shaky frame-rate, and the amount of pop-in it has to offer. Would have been a hell of a system seller on something that could keep a straight 60fps, even if the graphics didn't scream 'next-gen'.
It will probably be out for PC six months later.
Yeah, I agree. I can only imagine the amount of immersion GTA would have on a new platform. Besides having tons of indoor environments, I've always wished that there was less de-popping as well(car crashes, bodies/bloodstains, etc.). Maybe the next GTA needs to just bust out with a crime-simulator MMO lol
NY Times Q&A with Dan Housler.

Hearing this guy say he avoided watching 'The Wire' for professional reasons sounds like a load of bullshit lol GTA has always been low on the believability-scale and is closer to feeling like a cartoon most of the time, so I have no idea why he tries to spout off about all this realism BS and how he needs to keep from tainting his work by not watching some of the best-written crime-dramas in our time.
I can't wait for this game, but seriously I care more about seeing Saints Row 4 launch at this point. At least that game embraces what it is.
I can only hope that the driving / flying physics have been adjusted to actually be enjoyable.
cant get this out of my head![]()
