Every one of these people carrying around hand sanitizer are going to be in an ICU clean room in 40 years because they have contracted a cold and their body won't know how to fight it off.

Seriously, it's bacteria and it's been around for, oh I don't know, MANY MILLENIA. My grandparents and all their siblings grew up in depression era Oklahoma. My grandma and grandpa met in a shantytown where both their families were living. They didn't have soap, running water, or hand sanitizer. Every one of them is still alive today with very few health problems and they are all 70+. Think they complained about the soup kitchen's sanitation?
I know, anecdotal evidence is shitty, but the point is that there is a level of sanitation that will keep people safe from stuff like E coli, Salmonella, (insert deadly bacteria), and there's a level of sanitation that just breeds super viruses and weakens immune systems.

protip: Don't go in the ball pit in any public place. You just might find a dirty diaper with your head if you dive in.

Reminds me of a video the Onion did with the fake news ticker at the bottom, one of the things was "Deadly new strain of bacteria found to feed solely on hand sanitizer" lol

But I believe dear old George said it best:

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

This is so true and is something that kinda pisses me off about southern californians. I grew up in CT and everyone I knew had a cat and/or dog. I can only think of one friend who had allergies towards cats and I always felt bad for him (he really loved them).

I moved to cali and when we got an apt last year we got two cats. Lo' and behold, like 90% of my friends are allergic and I have to clean the furniture/carpet like crazy when they come over because they can't handle the cat dander. It shocked me, but the more I thought about it, none of them have pets (few even have dogs and those are usually tiny short-haired breeds). Even my husband was at first allergic and had to take claritin. It only took about two weeks though and he no longer needed it. Now it doesn't bother him in the slightest.

For sure cat allergies I would say is mostly exposure with a few "actual" cases here and there. Makes me sad 'cause I like hosting parties n' get togethers, but some are hesitant because of mah kittehs D:

    This, ffs.

I'm probably just particularly annoyed with this subject in having a friend that spends far too much time being scared of every possible germ/infection/worm/virus known to human kind (to the point it drives others crazy), but man I find this shit so dumb. Once upon a time, humans existed without anti-bacterials, hand soaps, and the 5 million different cleaning products we have today. This period is otherwise known as... 99.99% of our existence as a species. And look, we're still here! HOW DID IT EVER HAPPEN? Some of these people would have others convinced purell dates back to caveman times.

Yes, advancements in cleanliness, proper hygiene, and knowledge of cleaning habits had a decent affect on mortality rates from otherwise avoidable/preventable sicknesses over the past century... But there's a clear line between being practical and insanity.

You can't say the first paragraph and then try and cut off what would be the main argument with the 2nd paragraph when the average lifespan for the majority of history was 30~ years. This is further exemplified by the fact that this is still the average lifespan of many 3rd world nations where they lack proper sanitation/waste disposal. The fact that the average lifespan in the US is 72~ years is MUCH more than a decent increase. The line for practicality/insanity is very subjective. Most of the world would consider us insane American's bathing once a day, and Americans make fun of the French for their lack of bathing.

Do some people have an unhealthy obsession with cleanliness? Yes, but this is no different than any other kind of obsession (such as being so afraid of spiders that you would ban pictures of them from being posted outside of spoilers).

Kids get sick. Kids build up immunities early in life. By constantly sanitizing everything kids never have a chance to build up resistance to things. Let them go out and play in the fucking dirt. Every single one of us grew up playing in the places and none of us are dead. Least I don't think I am.

Brill has the right idea (oh god did I just say that)

There are several antibodies that our body loses the ability to produce at certain ages. If we aren't exposed to the antigens in time, we will never develop the antibodies, and this can lead to a host of auto-immune disorders and other chronic illnesses.

Anti-bacterial agents should be used only in regards to raw meat, and healthcare situations.

That's all well and fucking good until you remember that there are some strains that your body isn't very good at fighting, thanks to antibiotic resistance.

Keep on truckin' though. You're making people like me happy they have job security with your ignorance.

Innate immunity only goes so far, but you can get more than just bacterial diseases from this shit.

When you have a kid, make sure they breathe though a sanitary mask and are 'disinfected' every 3 hours...one day they WILL catch a common cold, and I hope it doesnt wind up killing them because to them that common cold is the equivalent of swine flu.
