I'm confused how the piss would end up not being his. Does the person that administers the test have just piss bottle after piss bottle in his fridge or something? I don't understand how him putting it in his fridge would pose any risk of a mixup. Contamination I can understand. Completely wrong piss that just happened to be someone taking large amounts of roids? I don't even think they make decimals that small.

I'm not so sure this incident, or general drug testing in sports, is a violation of HIPAA. Think about it, people get suspended all the time and the explanation is "substance abuse" or "violation of the league's drug policy". Yes the information shouldn't have been leaked prior to the appeal, but the fact that he failed a drug test isn't protected in these instances. I believe it's part of the collective bargining agreement that the results of drug tests are public information. Some medical procedures are exempt from HIPAA. If so and so, violated their probation by taking drugs, that information can be divulged. God I shouldn't have dropped out of law school. This kind of stuff interests me.

Are you upset that his grades were released, or that it was revealed that someone changed them? Two somewhat different things.

Also, I don't know what laws pertain to pupil school grades, but I doubt they are federal.

I believe, do not take me on my word here, that as part of the collective bargaining process athletes will waive their HIPAA rights in certain circumstances, such as injury reports and drug testing. For the MLB's drug testing however, those privacy rights are only waived following arbitration, not before.

If it was contaminated, it wouldn't have been from the break in the chain. It was in a sterile container, inside a sealed bag, inside a box. The contamination would have had to happen when it was open.

To sum it up he got off on a technicality, one the lab that tested the sample should have caught right then and there and taken care of by requesting a new sample.

I hear it was his Herpes meds that set off the test.

Side effect from that medicine is puffy skin

I think the MLB was absolutely terrified of a proven tampering case, which would absolutely blow up their testing reliability. They took their chance that Das would think a break in the chain of custody wasn't enough because they didn't want to risk compromising the integrity of their program further, and got burned.
MLB doesn't want to have to jump through hoops every time their program catches one, so when Braun presents a hoop they tell him no. There were some reports, as Tyche said, that both parties later changed their minds. MLB was willing to do DNA tests and Braun's camp decided not to.

Sounds like they fucked up - should've jumped through the hoop.

FYI, with the season starting Mar. 28th (Oakland vs Seattle @ Japan) I'll be starting up the official MLB thread about a week before hand, so I'm taking suggestions on thread names. So far all I've come up with is "How to dodge a failed drug test in one simple step" but I'm sure there's better out there.

Also on the topic of PED's, whose going to be the first one busted? I'm guessing Manny shortly after he finishes his 50 game suspension.

MLB 2012 Season Discussion: The Eye of the Jew

So after all is said and done we find out that Braun's failed test was legitimate, but since MLB didn't follow the procedures outlined in the drug testing policy his suspension was lifted, which I agree with. We also found out that Braun is an even bigger douchebag than Barry Bonds, which is a shame because I like the guy and his reaction to this whole process only makes him look worse than if he'd have just kept his mouth shut.

Shit, didn't know Shyam Das posted here.

Samples kept at room temp in a Tupperware container for two days are valid and the results of such a sample are foolproof.

I learn so much in these threads.
