I'm not so sure this incident, or general drug testing in sports, is a violation of HIPAA. Think about it, people get suspended all the time and the explanation is "substance abuse" or "violation of the league's drug policy". Yes the information shouldn't have been leaked prior to the appeal, but the fact that he failed a drug test isn't protected in these instances. I believe it's part of the collective bargining agreement that the results of drug tests are public information. Some medical procedures are exempt from HIPAA. If so and so, violated their probation by taking drugs, that information can be divulged. God I shouldn't have dropped out of law school. This kind of stuff interests me.
