Besides, if it can't be called a beating, then there's no fucking point to it anyway. A light slap won't deter anyone from doing anything, and it's more likely to teach them that you don't care what they did than that it's wrong.

The only time it is appropriate to lay a hand on a child would be with very little kids, a light slap can be used to communicate "hay, don't do that". However, do note that it is being used as a form of communication, not as a punishment.

lol. I agree that there is room sometimes for spanking a child though it should never be the first stop and should never be done in anger. Discipline is necessary. Those of us older than 20 would have been disciplined physically and it works. As long as it doesn't turn into abuse by going over the top and using it to relieve your anger. I've been on the ends of both and even as a kid you know when they've gone too far but you can't stop it. It's the adults who need to act like adults. This asshole judge went right past discipline and directly to child abuse. He was angry and fueling his abuse with his anger, berating her verbally and abusing her further this way and thirdly using his belt as a means of forcing his daughter to submit to him in his ultimate power trip.

I'm not a fan of hitting with a tool (like a belt). My dad hit our butts with a broom now and then. I don't think I'd ever go that far with kids. I think the problem/difference has been touched on by a few people and that's don't spank out of anger, or lose your head while doing it. The guy was definitely out of line and was too brutal in his punishment. Even with the broom my dad smacked us like twice and that was the end of that. This was insanely over the top. And as others said, she was way too old.

However, I don't think it's fair to say people shouldn't be allowed to spank their kids at all.

I agree with your points. A hand is often enough, just once or twice for correction. I got the wooden spoon and then wooden fork when I broke that on my ass. A hand is sufficient in most cases. Kids get too soft with all the PC bullshit that goes on today. If parents choose not to then that's their option. I for one will discipline my kids with the occasional spanking where warranted.

I was beat with a belt as a kid. My grandfather actually followed me outside as I ran and continued to beat my ass until the police were called by neighbors. Still loved that man to death. I feel it's probably more prevalent in the south, though I have no basis for that and could be wrong. I spank my kids, rarely, and never with objects. Strike that, I spank my four year old rarely. Never my 2 year old. The 2 year old is an emotional wreck, I can simply say "BAD GIRL" in a commanding voice, even jokingly, and she'll break down into tears. My four year old, however, has no soul. cannot agree with this enough. I think the screaming and the verbal abuse scared me more than the whipping, to be honest. sticks and stones will break my bones but words will permanently scar me, or something like that.

I will never spank my daughter or son. My mother beat the shit out of us because that was how she was raised. It's lazy parenting in my opinion. Instead of taking the time out to explain and coach your kid, just scare/beat the shit out of them so they dont do it again.
