    - Obviously leave the store immediately.

    - Depending on how bad the situation was, outside of the video, punishment would be handed down.

    - Punishment would range from light (no toys/video games for short duration), to severe (all toys, video games, etc, removed from room for a long ass time) if the kid was a persistent snot.

    - Might do something like buy the toy the kid was flipping out over, and make him hand it over to a needy child or a cancer patient; only hold-up on this would be if the kid got all snotty or threw a tantrum to the needy/cancer child.

I agree with all of the above, with the addition of a small nip with two fingers to the neck to let him know who is in control without giving him attention. something along the lines of a "tsst" sort of noise would help too.

Also, proud to say I never pulled this shit when I was a kid.

I only had two "OH MY GOD, I NEED TO HAVE IT" moments over something in a store. I've asked for things, and either got them or didn't, but it was never a huge deal.

#1: I was a huge ninja turtles action figure collector. Quite a few of them were really hard to find, especially considering eBay, Amazon and the internet as we know it didn't exist yet.

Ninja turtle action figures were like $4, so my mom didn't really care about buying them so much.

One I could never find was Super Shredder. I knew it existed from TV commercials and the backs of other action figure boxes, but could never find it. Randomly found one in an Osco Drug of all places, and asked my mom to buy it. I think she bought it for the simple reason of never having to look for it again.

#2 was "Super Mario 3". Saw it in a store for like $40, asked my mom for it. She didn't want to spend $40 on a video game. I told her "I have $30 of birthday money on me" - I'll pay for $30 if you pay the rest. She wanted me to put that money away for college. My rebuttal was "Mom, $30 isn't going to keep me out of college. And if I spend it on this game, it's just like I got it for my birthday instead of getting money." I was a bit of a smart ass, but a clever one at least.

She had no counter argument, and we bought it.

All the hand holding save the world shit just flat out doesn't work with every child in every situation. You also need to make sure they aren't in control. Leaving a store or stopping whatever you're doing is a sure way to not be in control as their actions determine your own. I have two girls. The take away punishment works for one of them, but my other girl just holds grudges. She will make you pay for taking her toys by scaling up. I can pop her ass and she'll cry, then come to me and say she is sorry on her own. Children are people, not cattle. You can't rope them all together. Some kids just suck ass. If I had boys, I would likely have to be more physical than I am with the girls but they usually melt with a harsh tone.

I don't care one way or the other what you do to your kids, but don't try to control how I raise mine. The initial video is terrible for a number of reasons. She is too old for it, medical condition, severity, etc etc. I had worse growing up and I respect my parents for doing what was necessary. I was a great kid, but when I messed up, I did it gloriously. I don't get into gunfights daily, I don't get into trouble, I don't beat my woman. Don't lump people up. Humans are different. A hundred people will react to a situation in dozens of different ways. Just sayin. Case by case basis.

Actually the entire point was to continue what you were doing and ignore them.

Hitting it with a water bottle is the only answer, obviously.

Fun fact: My biology teacher (high school) kept a Super Soaker loaded in his classroom. If someone fell asleep, fucked up or was otherwise wrong on a random question, they got squirted. Everyone in his classes (notoriously harder than the alternative lameass biology teacher) passed with a B or higher.

Would have taken the cards he had, sat him down at the dinner table and slowly burned his cards in front of him one-by-one until he calmed his shit.

    EDIT: Start with the foils.

One-up: My Chemistry/Physics teacher (had him two separate semesters) did the same, except with the decontamination hose he had at his lecture desk. He was a bit of a smartass too. Him and one girl in the class got into a smartass-off... I think that was the fastest he ever whipped it out.

Yeah I got my ass beat as a kid but that was usually reserved for when I really messed up. But all my parents usually had to do was just say "no Nintendo," which, to me, was like a death sentence. Of course that usually lasted no more than a couple weeks.

Yes, if you people hadn't been hit at a young age, you clearly would not have known not to get involved in gun fights.

no nintendo was always an effective punishment for me.

screaming at me to the point that I would wake up in the middle of the night afraid my dad was going to come into my room and murder me, not so much.

Maybe he would have gotten into gunfights without it? Who is to say? It's the problem with the whole thread, just like ffxi, shits situational and if you want to paint every situation as black and white, only one way to raise a child etc... then you're just being silly. I will say that his post pretty much summed up my entire feelings on this thread and physical punishment in general. How about we say people raise their kids the way they want as long as they aren't crossing the obvious fucking lines that we all know are there and we all know what they are, unless you just want to be purposely obtuse and claim spankings either come toilet paper soft or mike tyson like swings.

Also I think this thread is just about good on anecdotal evidence from both sides. We get it, some of us got spanked and turned out ok, some of us never got spanked and turned out ok, some of us got the shit beat out of us and turned out ok and some of us got the shit beat of us and still suffer from mental damage.

Well here's the issue. Psychological studies are the best resource we have for understanding the effects of physical punishment. Anecdotes are not sources of evidence due to the overwhelming lack of experimental control. Arguments utilizing anecdotes are so feeble that I can replace physical punishment with any event and reach the same conclusion. More concretely, the premises and inferences necessary to argue that physical punishment helped are just as useful for saying that giving a dog a cookie helped. If any event can replace physical punishment in the argument, then it is unlikely that the outcome occurs because of the event itself. It would be like saying that the statement "If P, then R; P; therefore, R" is contingent on the letter P rather than the placement of the letter in logical notation. The proponent of physical punishment also puts forth arguments roughly equating to the notion that physical punishment helps with an immediate situation. In so far as people fear pain and recognize pain as resulting from their actions, it's almost obvious that physical punishment works for the immediate situation. However, it is not clear that the immediate situation is even important for future development. Simultaneously, it is immediately obvious that the action was a default rather than tertiary mechanism.

In short, evidence is stacked against proponents of physical punishment. While anecdote may stack in favor of the proponents, it is a meaningless rebuttal.
