To me it looked like the mother at least tried some to shield the child from some of the father's fury. She acted, to me, like she gets the shit beat out of her on a routine basis, and probably took some licks later on for interrupting his beating of the girl. If she wanted to beat the girl or see her hurt she would have hit her more than once (had to hit her at least once to get the dad to chill some) or let the dad keep going IMO. Sure she could do more, but she is probably just as much, if not more, a victim than the girl was/is. Those kinds of guys get their rocks off dominating people and making them submit.

Oh, and totally was spanked as a child with a few different objects lol. Never more than 2-3 licks though, and while they sounded scary (leather belt is loud as fuck) neither my father or my mother ever truly hurt me. Short story:

Cable company I used to work for provided service to this gravitational well of stupidity. One night this very polite lady with an accent very much along the lines of the Judge's calls up because her internet is broken. Naturally, being over the age of 50 and a hillbilly, she was functionally retarded. So she puts her granddaughter on the phone to do the work for her, because she doesn't understand things like "click" "computer" "left" or "right".

So the grandaughter comes on the phone, and is very nice. I start telling her what to do, and 2 steps in grandma yanks the phone back. She's not screaming, I remember this very clearly because she was perfectly calm. She starts calling the granddaughter and "idiot" and a "useless, bastard child". Now, the kid didn't do anything wrong (yet) and I'm getting upset listening to her talk down to this poor girl so ruthlessly. The entire time the granddaughter is saying "Yes ma'am" and "I'm sorry". We're not supposed to interrupt people but after about 40 seconds (I timed -everything- at this place, was part of the QA) I got sick of listening to it and came to the poor girls defense. "Ma'am, she hasn't done anything wrong we aren't done yet"

Well, it didn't stop her. It made it worse.

"Oh, she just wants you to think that she's all poor and innocent. You tell me what to do and I'll tell her".

I got to then spend 30 minutes relaying instructions through this woman, listening to her berate the poor girl every time that she did something wrong or we wound up on the wrong screen because of her misdirections. I also got to listen to the grandmother explain why the granddaugher was there.

Paraphased, it was a lot more upsetting than this: "Her parents died 4 years ago leaving the rotten little thing with me. All she does is talk back, she never does anything I say. Her good for nothing parents had to get killed by a drunk mexican in a car accident and here I am with this sassy little brat who doesn't respect me". Again, stopping to call the granddaughter an idiot and anytime the grand daughter would say "I don't think that's right" she would start yelling at her to stop talking back to her. Every single time the grand daughter was right.

Why didn't I take her defense? Well, the first time I made it worse by putting her on the end of the attack. The first time I corrected the grandmother, that she was right she launched into the "dead parent story". After that I kept silent, I didn't want to risk any more 'stories' or enraging the dumb woman who would take it out on the kid. This would have been....2005, and the old woman consistently brought up the daughters age (13).

Why am I bringing this story up? Because a supervisor and I had a very long discussion about taking the recording to Corporate and asking for it to be giving to CPS. I'm not doing it justice, this woman was pure venom towards a girl who was doing nothing wrong, and you could hear the confusion, and sadness in the girls voice. In the end, we decided it wasn't worth it because A: The recording is bad, but its verbal abuse. Yes, this is just as bad if not worse than physical in some cases but it's a grayer area. B: We both decided that if this didn't help, it would very likely make things much worse for the girl.

Considering THIS is possibly the Judge who would have made that decision, I'm glad we held back. I'm also terrified about what else is going to come out of this, because reading the links on Reddit is just making my head spin.

I just wanna start off and say, how the fuck did the Mom do everything she could to help her daughter? It's not like she raised her voice to the husband or struggled with him for the belt. She took a belt and hit her daughter with it too. Sure not to the degree he did, but she isn't innocent here. She used harsh words and language at her daughter.

If the mother is being abused by the father she's not going to be jumping all over him and trying to take the belt in fear of being beat herself. What she did do though was take the belt and kept telling her husband no you can't have it back, then she had the daughter turn over and hit her once then left the room, she did this to defuse the situation. She was very obviously trying to stop what was going on but that was the best way she felt that she could do it.

I'm not trying to say that there wasn't more that the mother could do, but it's very easy for us to sit back and say "Oh hey she should have done this!" whereas it's much more difficult in the rush of the situation, especially if you're being abused yourself.
