I think this just highlights the need for contraction. Too many teams for the power balance to ever work out as is, small market necessarily suffer. Even if they get a good lotto, LeBron and Carmelo have set a precedent where everyone wants to bolt.

Or you can just shorten the first and second rounds of the playoffs to 3-5 game series respectively so the lower seeds have a decent chance to steal a few games and win

the only series that needs to be 7 games are the ones being played for conference/championships. everything else should be 5 games TOPS

The new luxury penalties that start in 2013 are basically a hard cap. Not even the Lakers/Knicks/Mavs will want to pay 40million per 10 million over the cap - not to mention teams over the cap lose the ability to sign and trade, and lose the MLE.
