Where's a trustworthy place to get a 'best anime of the year' breakdown? I'm not particularly interested in lists ranked by amount of fanservice, but more honest appraisals of writing, direction, acting, etc.

Maybe BG could do one but I worry it would be dominated by the Zero G Cup Awards.

Winter: Madoka, Yumeki Merry, (Level E?)
Spring: Tiger & Bunny, Nichijou, Steins;Gate, [C], MariaHolic S2, (Deadman Wonderland? idk, didn't keep an eye on it)
Summer: Usagi Drop, (Penguindrum?)
Fall: Fate/Zero, Working S2, Mirai Nikki

If there's an anime of the year, it's probably in that batch.

I never found any if it exists. Rankings are almost always synonym of popularity, which say very little about quality. The best way there is is to find someone with similar taste go with it

If you're not looking for anything in particular other than good quality, I would pick something in this list,

Winter: Madoka, Star Driver
Spring : Ano Hana, Stein;gate, Tiger&Bunny, Nichijou, C: money of soul
Summer: Usagi Drop, Penguindrum
Fall: Persona, Un-go, Mirai Nikki
Ova/movie: Break Blade, Kanatagatari (might have ended last year, I forgot)

Madoka and penguindrum if you want something messed up and weird.
Usagi drop and Ano Hana if you want something depressing.
Nichijou if you want slice of life/random gag
Stein;gate, C and Mirai Nikki all had interesting setting. Stein;gate was probably the most popular out of the 3 this year.

If you want some action, Break Blade is excellent and so was katanagatari. Tiger&Bunny had its moment as well.

Madoka, Steins;Gate, C: The Money of Soul and Possibly Control (more commonly C or C: Control or any random variation), AnoHana, and Penguindrum are the top 5 for this year.

I could also add in personal favorites or guilty pleasures like a bunch of comedies but for now, since you just asked for a best of list, that's the 5 I'd give you.

Of those which exist only in Anime form? Most of the time if something is a manga adaptation I'd rather burn through the books quickly, or if it's an eroge adaptation I ignore it altogether.

The one listed are original adaptations or are very well done and worth being watched. Fate/Zero, Persona and Stein;gate are based on games, but the adaptations are just fine (especially Stein;gate). Usagi Drop has a manga, but the art is incredible in the anime, and Nichijou animation is one of the best I've seen for a slice of life/comedy.

Mirai Nikki is the only one I would read I guess, but it's also one of the last series I would watch.

Fate/Zero, Madoka, Steins;Gate probably going to be the top 3 of the year by volume of discussion/fan base, not in any particular order

The rest are just opinions. Steins;Gate is my favorite so far. Fate/Zero will be my favorite if it maintains the same quality.

I would if it was finished, but it's still coming out and probably not finishing till late next year (if that).

I'm seconding everything posted as well. If you want the best anime of the year, it's somewhere in that list.

Of the last seasons that I PERSONALLY watched and thought were way above average: Fate/Zero, Ano Hana, Madoka, Usagi Drop, Penguindrum, Tiger&Bunny.

I personally tried to care for C: The money of something something but I really don't think it was executed very well, I don't know what people see in it. It's not bad but it's not that great, I think it's probably firmly in the category of 'good'. Yumekui Merry also belongs there. Level E, on the other hand, is an EPIC troll series, and well worth a watch, but I wouldn't say it's one of the best series overall.

Yeah, there is a lot of overlap here. Things are generally discussed a lot for a good reason. I would add Steins;gate and Persona cause I've heard so much good about them, but I haven't yet watched them. (They're on the list).

Katanagatari was last year, and I wouldn't say it's for action fans. There is far more sitting around and talking than there is action, it's like a 4:1 ratio. Not that it isn't one of the most amazing shows I've ever seen.
