    For example:

    Felt Robe
    Felt Robe (Brown)
    Felt Robe (Green)
    Felt Robe (Red)
    Felt Robe (Red) w/ HP
    Felt Robe (Red) w/ MP
    Felt Robe (Brown) w/ HP
    Felt Robe (Brown) w/ MP
    Felt Robe (Green) w/ HP
    Felt Robe (Green) w/ MP
Well they could somehow (through UI overhaul) make it so when you click "Felt Robe" for example, it simply goes into a submenu with all its variants rather than listing it all there in the AH.

    b) convert all Felt Trousers (Red) to Felt Trousers (unbuffed, undyed) and anger the large number of people who bought the pants because of the STR and didn't give a damn about the color

The people in group a) have no serious argument. You signed up for red +STR trousers, so red +STR trousers is what you gets.
The people in group b) would have a legitimate gripe, particularly if they blew up a lot of stuff getting a double- or triple-melded pair.

P.S. I strongly doubt dyed items will keep materia. It's almost certainly going to use the existing synthesis system, thereby making it a "new synth" in every respect that matters. Unless you think the dye system will be like repairing or melding?
    a) won't happen because they said items can be dyed multiple times and b) might happen because we're talking about the devs that made 90% of all gear in the game (ra/ex included) inferior in a single update.

Oh SE, how you love to complicate something as simple as floss.

This is definitely up there with rocket science and brain surgery in terms of complexity.

    What's complicated about this exactly?

1- You can "add" stats to items through synthesis (this creates a new item with a name that reflects the new stats).
2- You can dye any item, including those created via 1. This only changes the color.

    Am I missing something?

I guess by complicated they mean unnecessary. Personally I am assuming that when Yoshida was talking about gear model dictating it's stats we will see slightly altered gear models in the future when the memory usage ceases to be an issue. The production tools certainly allow for this sort of tweaking efficiently already.

Would be nice to get a confirmation for one way or the other obviously.

Yoshida obviously liked the idea of "base gear" and using it to create more powerful gear with new stats, since that's exactly what we had after 1.19. The issue with that system was that players still wanted the freedom to color things the way they wanted.

The new system accomplishes both things. I don't really care about coloring my gear, but it's pretty clear that enough people do since they even mentioned this was a player-suggested change.

What sucks is how it's very likely that "dyeing" still means "synthing" because that means we'll lose our materia when dyeing items. The "word of caution" at the end makes me think that come 2.0 we might get a real dyeing system that's not attached to the synthesis system though.

Yeah but if only the stats change then it's pretty pointless. Materia enables for those kind of modifications already.

But if the actual gear model changes then there's more of a purpose for this.

They specifically stated exactly the opposite.

Due to the game's data structure, it is not possible at present to dye an item more than once. After Version 2.0, however, players will be able to dye an item multiple times.
Unless you're talking about how these items will be handled in the conversion to 2.0 next year, there will be no re-dyeing.

It seems like a good idea, but why not wait until your game is ready to apply dye to an already created piece of gear, instead of going through all this. Sigh.

Its not "immersive" unless its overly complicated. That's been the Online FF mantra for years now.

Mostly because he's trying to redo the entire dye system. Right now each color uses an individual model and I believe he's trying to program armor where there's only one model where the hue changes depending on the dye used. Sorta like TF2 and paint.

So if they can't figure out how to do this dye thing not-fucktarded, then I guess I should just crumple and burn this suggestion for gear-remodeling now huh?

I prefer hidden option c) convert felt trousers (red) into felt trousers of strength.
That way I get the buff I was looking for, and have the option to redye my pants red if that was really what I wanted (no, thank you!)

In regards to dyeing HQ gear and materia-melded gear, dyeing these items will have no adverse affect on their stats. If you dye a +3 gear item, you’ll produce the same +3 gear but in a different color. If you dye gear with materia melded to it, you will have the same gear with the same materia but in a different color.

To dye equipment, simply select the materials and the desired dye from the synthesis menu. Once you begin synthesizing, the synthesis process will be skipped, and dyeing will succeed 100% of the time.

Regarding player requests to have NPCs handle dyeing equipment, we plan on allowing NPCs to dye equipment basic colors and crafters to dye equipment rare colors in version 2.0.

Lol, it's a real dyeing system. Did not expect.

    Good job!

EDIT: Hopefully they go with option c) for converting current items and make everyone happy.

Wow, I must say that I am perpetually amazed by the excessive competence of Yoshida and his team, as their solution is both logical and reasonable. (I really like the dye plans for 2.0!) I guess 8 years of SE has dulled my expectations beyond repair.

    Well played, sirs.

This, I care much more about my gear being nerfed than what color it is.
