Treadmill Noise in Second Floor Apartment

I have a treadmill in a second floor apartment. It's noisy. We run on it during the day or evening only. We've put pads underneath it but I worry this amplifies the sound rather than muffling it.

There's an 85 year old man living below us. I've asked him about it but I don't think he remains all there.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to lessen the sound of a treadmill so we don't annoy our downstairs neighbour?

We have wood floors and the 4 unit building is about 60 years old.

What is he going to do outside that would help with the treadmill noise?

Use the treadmill outside. You're welcome.

And? (of course this is easy for me to say, running year-round in Virginia... I only run on my treadmill when it's raining and there's a flood watch, blizzard or t-storms). Dress in layers.

As far as the treadmill goes, there's not much you can do on it. If you're heavy heel strikers it will be louder than if you can run with minimum wasted motion, i.e. not bounding up and down. Maybe work out with your downstairs neighbor the times that it's okay to run/get loud/shake the ceiling and see what they have to say. I'd get some heavy carpet, put the rubber pad on top of that, maybe some plywood and another rubber mat and see how that works in dampening the vibration and noise.

Doesn't she live in Halifax? Virginia has nothing on Canada's east coast...

I didn't mean to imply that Virginia has more severe and/or shitty weather. Comparing Virginia to Halifax is like comparing Florida to Virginia, minus the crazy old people. We have crazy here, but it's a different type of crazy.

Apartments in Canadia don't have gyms near the tennis courts and swimming pools? How barbaric.

You wouldn't know that though because you've demonstrably never picked up a book nor educated yourself on the matter. Let me guess, overweight housewife?

Honestly if the guy downstairs isn't complaining about it I wouldn't worry that much about it. I live in a place where if you even fart loud enough, someone will complain on you, people don't hesitate to bitch about the stupidest shit anymore. So if this guy doesn't complain at all, fuck it. Keep on running.

I am apparently an expert on getting the police called on me for noise complaints. Hell, just happened yesterday. Never mind the fact that it was a Saturday and we were celebrating a bachelor party. But it's all kind of bullshit, I've had families of six that lived ABOVE me (kids basically running around nonstop for 15 hours a day) call the cops on me, yet I've never called the cops on anyone for noise. People just need to accept the fact that if you have adjoining walls, there is going to be some fucking noise every once in awhile.

Seriously. I work for a private security firm and we get calls daily from people complaining about noise. Usually at like 5PM. Uh, really? Call us back if they're still making noise after 10PM, okay? I only call the cops and/or security if it's excessive. 3AM on a Wednesday? Fuck you. 11PM on Friday? Party on.
