    Graphic design questionnnnnnn

so, after watching this trailer i bought this book. i like the style of it and i'd like to do some similar stuff for a marketing idea i have but ive never worked with animated shit, only a few short gifs like 5-6 years ago.

how many options do i have? im familiar with photoshop CS5 so id prolly be most comfortable with adobe products but i can learn w/e as long as its functional.

books pretty good btw. got it for kindle, if you've taken a few psychology classes and got A's its prolly no bueno but i didnt so its been pretty awesome. haven't finished it yet but fuck you im reading 4 books at the same time

Adobe Aftereffects, I think, is probably the best tool for your goal. Most TV / web animation is done in Adobe Flash, and the new thing (actually made for animation so it is not a pain in the ass) is Toonboom. But you just want to spinny flippy effect things all over the place, and that is what Aftereffects does best.

I haven't ever actually USED Aftereffects, so I can't give you any hands on advice about how it actually does so, though.

well I couldnt view the trailer, but it looks somewhat like flash based to me. So adobe flash, premier maybe and/or illustrator. then again I could be wrong since I didnt see the whole thing.

After Effects and knowing how to use a 3D CGI program (e.g. Cinema, 3DS, etc.) will be sufficient for making any cool shit you want to make.

I have no help for this thread other than that was the badassest little commercial I have seen. Very interesting.

He should tag on there that there's a cheating way to get out of procrastination, too.

It's called Wellbutrin+Aderol. No joke. It's 2AM and I just scrubbed the bathroom, swept and mopped the floors (I have tile everrrrywhere) and shaved all the parts.

And then I get to relax a moment and do the things I really wanna do before bed. :D

Safe to say this was mostly done with Adobe After Effects and a bit of Illustrator to import some of the vectors used. That effect is called Kinetic Typography. Its pretty fun working with After Effects once you get the hang of it.

You can find a ton of tutorials on Youtube or http://www.videocopilot.net/tutorials/

There's another really good website that I remember using for reference but I'll have to do some searching for it. I'll try to find it!

Looks like Flash @[email protected] can import Illustrator files to it too iirc. Haven't developed with Flash in years, but you could make that video with it for sure.

yeah but i'm balls w/illustrator cause ive never really used it. i'd kind of like an improved version of that also (video co-pilot is awesome cause it has tuts for like movie intro type shit). I'm writing a book and have two more planned afterwards and then this megahuge project begins so ill probably have like a 6-12 month stretch to learn this. gotta find some good photoshop+illustrator resources tho thanks for reminding me

If your talking about animated website/animations then Flash CS3 is probably what your looking for. CS4+ uses some new way of motion tweening which is sorta hard to learn... It might be good to learn it, but stick with >CS3 for now.

Also, learn Illustrator to create your images etc. If you use photoshop to try to create a "vector" look i keel you. lol

The true sign of an amateur thinks that the only tool to create still images is Photoshop. In reality, you should only be creating your special effects (backgrounds, "painted" effects) in photoshop and adding text and any other smooth stuff (swooshes, circles, shapes) in illustrator.

There is nothing in that video that you can't do with Adobe After Effects, or I guess flash but I don't know flash. The very few areas where the text seems to rotate around an invisible box can be easily accomplished in AfterEffects with 3d layers. You can make all the text layers in AE and all the animations in AE.

Typography video's like this are done with Adobe After Effects and also Final Cut Pro (macs only). I've done a bunch of them as school projects, it's all about keyframing and working backwards. You set up the finished set of words and then work it backwards. It is all done with a 3D camera. If you have any questions you can PM me.
