Monitor going into power saver mode

Short version: Monitors keep going into sleep mode while in the middle of task. Have to restart and move cables around a lot for it to start working again.

Ok I use to have 1 monitor connected VIA a VGA cable. Every now in then the monitor would just go into sleep mode while I was in the middle of something and refused to work again until I messed around for a bit and restarted. I switched to a DVIX cable or w/e it is and restarted and it started working. Got a new VGA cable and went back to it so my gf could have her pc back and it worked for awhile then started doing it again randomly but eventually stopped. Around 2 months ago I moved into a new apartment and haven't had any troubles. About 3 weeks after moving i decided to take her pc monitor (shes been playing on the plasma now scene we use hers for streaming movies now) so now I have to monitors. One is connected with a VGA the other with DVIX. Haven't had any troubles. Today however I was int he middle of a SC2 match and both monitors just randomly go into sleep mode at the same time. I jiggle the wires and get nothing. I restart the computer and get nothing. Restart again and nothing. Try to just get VGA working with the factory VGA slot instead of the gpu slot and nothing. I try putting just the DVIX cord in the gpu slot (doesn't have one for motherboard) and it starts working again when I restart. I put the VGA in just to get it out of the way and it starts working again after about 2 min. Any Ideas? This crap is getting annoying

It could be your video card itself. A lot of processors these days require a graphics card to display video at all, and with both monitors going out at once it seems unlikely that your issue is with cables or the monitors themselves.

Have you replaced your GPU at any point since this started, or is it all using the same card?

Its a cheep pos computer to get me threw school. I added a cheep 60 dollar xfx gpu a couple months ago. I thought that might be the problem so when it does it I try to plug the vga into the stock port and it doesnt help. But now that I think about it would the stock vga connection still work with the new gpu drives running?

It is a separate device, it should have its own drivers.

edit: though some mobos will disable the onboard video if you have a dedicated video card. Check your bios for such an option.

    What task?

Otherwise, as you've not mentioned it, it's possible to prevent it from going into Power Save Mode (unless I'm thinking of something completely different) via Control Panel > Power Options?

If I misunderstood, please disregard lol

Yeh my bad, I misunderstood then. Sounds like "I leave it to do a task, and afk" to me.

In this case I have no idea, sorry to waste time

I would still double check/make sure monitor and pc are set to never go into sleep mode if you haven't.

thought i was the gpu so i RMA'ed it and they have replaced it and its otw back to me but started having the problem again all of a sudden today... First time sence removing the gpu. Any ideas of what else could be causing the problem?

edit: screen just went black for about 3 seconds and came back to screen (where normaly it would just go into power saver mode)

found a thread stating that it could be a problem with the battery attached to the mother board... any idea if that could be the problem?

I had the same problem but it was just the DVI cable.. one of the pins broke off so it would slide out of the slot and would always put the screen into power save.
If pushing the cable so it connects better doesn't work you should try a different one.

I can't think of anything hardware related that would randomly shut it on/off though.

some new simpoms. Hooked the pc up to a tv to stream shit offline. No troubles for about a week. No all of a sudden its being a bitch again. The screen will occasionally go black and start making humming noises for a few min before either going back to the screen or rebooting its self. Another thing its doing is horizontal lines will flash before it reboots some times (not always, and kinda looks like a bad signal but its not). The computer is connected via HDMI atm. so its nothing to do with the monitor, GPU, cmos battery, cables (vga, hdmi)

went to walmart and bought a pc comparable to it... swiched out the psu's and so far its been running fine. Doesnt always mean that the problem is fixed... but its useable for now at least. Thanks for input

welp spoke to soon... 10 min into start up tv went blue and made buzzing sound, then swiched to black making more random buzzing sounds. Finally it stoped on a black screen and the sound from the show i was watching is going but no picture :/
