    Network cable tester

Hi all, looking for any recommendations of a network cable tester for cat 6. If it has a tone generator, would be nice too but not necessary.

How often are you going to use it? Do you want to be able to test other types of line also? Are you just checking for a short or wanting to test speed?

You can spend a couple hundred on a nice Fluke or Paladin that will test just about any line. Or if you just need to test one line you can use a cheap multimeter.

We're running about 8-10000 feet of cable (cat6), so probably around 150 lines. Testing for speed and all may be nice but primary goal is to ensure it was crimped and terminated/ wired properly. Also going to be running ~6000 feet of cat 3 w/ rj11 for phone lines, a little less worried about that.

I use this one. Works great, no problems, has tone, and does phone and coax also.

If you're just looking for pin-outs and tone generation for cheap, I use this one and have been pleased with it.

I use this one as well. The tone generation kinda sucks on it (doesn't seem as strong as the nicer units). Don't forget to get the tone probe if you plan on using it for that.
