I'm really amazed at people's reactions to this, I think any school I went to I'd have been lucky to get my phone back if I got caught using it during school at all, let alone to publicly trash a person I was on a field trip to visit.
Personally, I don't think this really matters. Tinker vs Des Moines gives students all of their legal rights in schools. Including freedom of speech. The only thing that it limits is the freedom of speech in regard to the learning environment. If a student is making a large distraction, then, and only then, can something be done by the school. A post on a social media website is not a disruption to students. Also, assuming your assumption is true, this was likely some type of field trip which had transportation, and judging from the context of that tweet, it seems to have been typed after they had left, which would support that if this is the case, she was likely typing it on the way back.

While that's my own assumption, in the end, it still doesn't matter. Considering the following, the general public's reaction to this is correct. Specifically in the fact that she is being asked to write something not because of when it was written, but rather, the content of what was written. Also,

thank you public officials for gracing us with your glorious holy selves. Allow me to never voice an opinion critical of you because you've given me a chance to be in the presence of your awesomeness.

Yeah, you're right, it's not like when you get to go on a field trip and learn about shit that's important in person, you're there as a representative of your school or anything.

I bet the first thing Brownback did when he heard about it was have some staffers set up the next visit.

Individual matters of discipline for high school students should not be up to the office of the Governor. It's hysterical that you're ignoring this part of the story.

Yes, I'm totally ignoring the discipline enacted by the office of the governor.

I wonder if that could be because it doesn't exist.

They called the principal. If that's not interference then I wonder where you'd draw the line. The only reason this is a story is because the governor's office made that phone call.

Oh, I see. So, when you go on a field trip and publicly claim to have been a dick and behaved inappropriately, and make said claims while on said field trip... it's a huge terrible offense for the people you're visiting to "tell on you."

literally scratching my head reading this shit going wait what?

I mean, when I went to school, let's say I was on a field trip, didn't have twitter back then, so we'll pretend I was passing notes.

    I do the following:

    1. Go to meet the governor and check out the capitol.
    2. Write a note claiming to have been rude and told the governor he sucked to his face.
    3. Posted said note in the newspaper for everyone to see
    3. Gotten caught passing said note to a friend, and had the people in the office give it to my principal.
    4. Been told to write a letter of apology to the governor.

I'm pretty sure my response would not have been to go to the news about it, and my parents would have told me to shut the fuck up and laughed me out of the room if I'd suggested it.

Except we're not talking about when you went to school. Your example is out of touch with the reality of the current world very similar to the staffers on this governor's staff that over reacted. It's simple. Schools have no right to censor the speech of either their professors, which is why they get tenure to protect them from that very thing, and their students in the aforementioned Tinker case. Just because she is representing her school doesn't mean that she can't form a political view and have that view constitutionally protected because she's in highschool. Being controversial and diverse, including political views, is a constitutionally praised and accepted concept. Supreme Court says so. Just because she voiced her opinion and more people happened to hear about doesn't mean its any less protected under the first amendment.

You're joking, right? Shawnee Mission still sucks despite being the top district in the Metro area. At least it's not Argentine or Turner.

edit: Also Plow, regardless of what she said she had a right to say it. She should not have been told to apologize by anybody, even if she was 'representing her school' as a student. She has a right to disagree with that jackass' policies.

You can't tell me you like Brownback. He's done nothing but fuck up Kansas education since he was elected. Or did you forget the districts that were shut down and/or merged? Let's not forget the funding cuts he wants for state financial aid:

    www.ksedpolicy.com/?p=297

I mean, fuck sake, we're already sitting at almost a 10% tax. Now they want to justify cutting state aid instead of maybe getting the potheads out of Leavenworth and quit wasting taxpayer money on shitty cops that camp lights while assholes pull wheelies around 435?

    Come on now.

Comparing passing notes to tweeting is a bad analogy. This would be more as if she wrote an letter to a local paper about the trip, the paper published it and then afterwards she was told to apologize for writing the letter.

If anything the governors office should have made the the issue to the school only, and for being a rude to the governor on the trip leaving the tweet out of it. They shouldn't have demanded anything publically - they could have just asked the school to assign her some bullshit work for being disrespectful on a school trip and left it at that. Mirth achieved.

By identifying her and demanding an apology based on protected speech they set themselves up for this. The bigger question I guess is are there really that few issues in Kansas that an obnoxious teenager can command this sort of attention of the Gov?

What's your problem with this, Plow? Legally, you're wrong. You've been shown you're wrong by several people here. There is a massive amount of legal precedent here. Your first post was questioning why people were upset about something. We then showed you why. Then rather than going "Yeah, ok, I get it." You continue to defend your point. You're wrong, man. People have a right to be upset about this (However small this issue may be.) If you still don't get why, then you're delusional. You're facing evidence, and willingly ignoring it. This seems to be how almost all of the super-rightwing people are here. Fucking delusional.
