New Internet, but my comp can't connect

Hey guys, did a search but no luck in finding an answer to my problem. We just got cable Internet in my place this week and I've constantly had problems with my computer in connecting to it wirelessly. As far as I know, I'm the only one out of about 5 devices in my house that connect wirelessly having problems.

My computer constantly sits on "indentifying" the internet, and it will randomly connect on its own. I have no explanation as to how it does, I usually walk away from the comp in anger, or open up a full screen game and the next time I check it's connected. Today I haven't been able to connect whatsoever, and all the googling I've done hasn't brought up an answer.

I had dsl running at the same time for a few days which I could connect to on my comp with no problem, so it seems to be specifically my computer vs the cable router (or maybe modem?). I have windows vista 64, and so far the only things I have tried to fix this is: restarting modem and router (of course ), reset winsock? Was just something I saw on google, I also reset the tcp/ip, and I have rebooted my comp many times, along with my wireless adapter.

Hopefully this isn't too much text, but any help would be appreciated.

A couple things quickly come to mind. Are you on the edge of the range for your router? Whats the signal strength?

Is theres possibly a number of leases restriction on your router? Sometimes routers are configured to only assign a low number of IPs. Its possible with your 5 devices you are reaching your limit and your router isn't assigning more IPs. An easy way to test this would be to power down a couple devices then trying your PC again.

What is your router model number? If you provide more I can look into it for you.

I'm pretty sure the identifying stage of getting an IP means that it hasn't been assigned an IP so it hasn't connected yet.

    edit:
Unless you mean connect as in hard wire. You could test a wire to router to see if its the PC or router causing the issue. If a wired connection works, obviously its the router and not a PC configuration issue.

I'm upstairs, so it would require me lugging my comp down there to connect with a wire.

As for the range, I can go much farther on my laptop and iPad with no problems in connection. Also, this router says it should be able to handle 50 different devices.

    I got a couple recommendations.

It looks like your router has an automatic firmware update in the settings. This is pretty easy for you to do...

    Go to:
    http://router or http://192.168.2.1

Click login, click submit (it shouldnt have a password unless you / your provider put one in).

The latest version of your firmware is version: 1.00.08, check under Firmware Update to see the current version. If its lower then what I said above, enable auto updating by following the steps below.

Left side > system settings > Auto Update Firmware Enabling > Enable > Apply Changes

If this doesn't let your device connect, I recommend resetting your router and trying again. Resetting will usually leave you with a unsecure network, so if you do reset and it gets everything back up and running. I can tell you how to enable a password on your wireless.

seems like you might be on the right track here; I'd try setting a static IP for your computer's MAC address outside of the dhcp pools addresses so you know there's definitely an IP allotted for you and troubleshoot from there. If that's over your head I can try to find something detailed.

Router is up to date. I was connected for a bit, but I changed some settings in the router site, and lost Internet when I went to save. I think I'll attempt what caiyuo suggested

If thats the case, I'd review the settings on another PC (preferably wired to router) and resave. Chances are that when that happened something could've gone wrong.

yeah it's not uncommon for a wireless connection to drop when saving changes to router settings

I have internet on my comp again... idgi I have been told that the mac address would not help my issue. "identifying means its trying to determine if you have internet access or not" "thats not likely to fix the issue since its stuck at identifying not acquiring network address"

So it's all good? Or someone's saying the problem is it isn't determining whether you already have internet access correctly? Sort of opens up a few potential avenues. What's the device setup there? A separate wireless router you're using with the cable modem? Were you doing the same thing when you had DSL?

It isn't fixed. I still don't reliably connect. My setup is cable modem to a single router that everything connects to, wired and wirelessly. With dsl, it was just phone line from wall to router, that's all.

I believe they are saying it can't determine if I have Internet, though I'm not sure. Ipconfig shows that I am not getting an ip address.

It's the same router that was used for the DSL that's being used for the cable, yes? I'd at least try setting a static IP for your machine just to see what all you can eliminate as far as possibilities.

Its a brand new router for the cable. The DSL router was one sent by verizon, this one we're using now we bought ourselves.

We just changed the security from WPA to WEP and I can connect automatically, no problem.

Be aware, that if you stick with wep, it can be cracked in a matter of seconds.
