Had to look for a version of the rant that excludes having to put up with Young Turks.

Where will he get his "national police"? The NaPo will be recruited from "young out-of-work urban men" and it will be hailed as a cure for the economic malaise of the inner cities.
In other words, Obama will put a thin veneer of training and military structure on urban gangs, and send them out to channel their violence against Obama's enemies.
Instead of doing drive-by shootings in their own neighborhoods, these young thugs will do beatings and murders of people "trying to escape" -- people who all seem to be leaders and members of groups that oppose Obama.
Blacks in power will incite violence against whitey? This is awfully familiar rhetoric.

Card has been openly insane for years. Even so, Ender's Game is one of the best Sci-Fi books ever. I have high hopes for the movie.

Correction, I assume that is a quote from Orson Scott Card? If so, could you link me to source? Sounds like a lot of the fear-mongering we heard from the right wing when Obama was about to be/was elected.

    Ends with this, btw

Will these things happen? Of course not. This was an experiment in fictional thinking.

But it sure sounds plausible, doesn't it? Because, like a good fiction writer, I made sure this scenario fit the facts we already have -- the way Obama already acts, the way his supporters act, and the way dictators have come to power in republics in the past.

Just keep your head down, and you'll be OK. Unless your children repeat at school things you said in the privacy of your home. Unless an Obama crony wants your house or your job. Unless you tell the wrong joke to the wrong people. Unless you have already written or said dangerous things that will come back to get you shot trying to avoid arrest ...

Just kidding. Because if I really believed this stuff, would I actually write this essay?
'haha just kidding' with a record of being an unconscionable racist and homophobe is pretty funny there, mr. card

I'm confused how he can write such good, deep books (the rest of the Ender series is very thoughtful and such), even books about humans cooperating with aliens
but still ... you know, be an asshat. It's really confusing.

Because the two aren't different sides of the same coin.

    Good news everyone:

    http://www.slashfilm.com/orson-scott...rs-game-movie/

Good news for fans of Ender’s Game who don’t want their movie ticket dollars lining the pockets of notorious homophobe: They won’t. After all that controversy over author Orson Scott Card‘s extreme conservative views, a new report indicates that Card doesn’t actually stand to make any money off of Gavin Hood‘s film, and never did.

However, devotees of Card’s story aren’t totally in the clear. Card is still profiting from sales of his original novel, which has climbed to the top of the New York Times bestseller list in advance of the film’s release. Hit the jump to learn why Card won’t rake in any of that sweet box office dough.

According to sources who spoke with TheWrap, Card made his movie deal a decade ago and has already been paid for it. The agreement did not include any backend, so he won’t make any more from it no matter how well the film does at the box office. Moreover, the site reports, although Card gets a producing credit, he did not have any creative control over or input into the film.

While it’s more typical these days for popular authors to have backend pay or some degree of creative control written into their contracts, it was less common when Card struck his initial deal. That fact, combined with his impatience over the long, drawn-out process, led to Card not receiving any profit participation. Which doesn’t mean he hasn’t already reaped the rewards.

A film adaptation of Ender’s Game has been in the works for decades. At one point early on, Card was paid $1.5 million to adapt the screenplay himself. But that incarnation never came together. By the time the current version came started to come together under OddLot Entertainment, though, Card had no financial or creative stake in the project.

Card’s outspoken anti-gay stance has proven to be a PR challenge for the marketing team. LGBT groups like Geeks Out called for a boycott of the movie, and the cast and crew have worked hard to separate themselves from Card’s statements. Card himself even issued a half-assed response at one point, asking for “tolerance” of his anti-gay views. Lionsgate, for its part, has promised to host a benefit premiere with proceeds going toward the LGBT community.

But now that we know a boycott won’t hurt Card’s bank account anyway, the better way to protest him would be to stop buying his books. Frankly, avoiding those purchases shouldn’t be too difficult in this day and age. Those who still want to read his novels can check them out at the library, borrow them from a friend, or, ahem, pirate digital copies — at which point they’ll discover a wonderfully moving tale about empathy in the face of war. Oh, the irony.

The Ender’s Game movie, which you can now appreciate with a clear conscience, opens this weekend.

And lol, telling people to protest the book which is fantastic and will still probably be better than the movie.

Well to be fair, they didn't say to not read it, just read it in ways he won't get money out of it.

Regardless of his views on this or that, he wrote the damn story, and it's a good story, so he should get paid for it. Boycotting the book is stupid. Being glad he's not getting paid for it is also stupid. I agree that he's a total scumbag when it comes to his views and I still to this day don't understand how he could possibly write the deep and complicated philosophical shit he does while being so narrow-minded but that's religion for you, it can turn even the most intelligent person into someone who treats other human beings like shit, but he still at least got off his ass and wrote the damn book and without him it wouldn't exist. So yeah.

Looking forward to reports about whether the movie is any good or not, since it opens today. I probably won't fork out the cash to go see it in the theater if it sucks (or maybe, if it's really bad, I will go just to see the trainwreck it turned into after so much stalling and rewriting of the script and whatnot).

I'm personally boycotting the movie because it's not lining the pockets of a crazy bigot.

Still don't get why anyone gives a shit. Ender's Game isn't some anti-gay propaganda book that indoctrinates the readers into hating homosexuals. There's no reason to care about this because the material is fine even if the author is a wacko, and while Card hates gay people giving him money isn't the end of the world.

LGBT special though, I find it funny they had/want to actually give money to them.

STOPPED AT CHIC-FIL-A BEFORE I WENT TO SEE THIS! TASTED GLORIOUS, MOVIE WAS GOOD!

The movie was actually pretty decent, they had to leave out some of the less "info about outside things" in the book, and i don't think there will be a follow up movie. But i'd honestly give it a 8/10.

    my personal scale
    10/10- lol yeah
9/10 - fantastic must see movie that 99% of folks who watch this will feel the same way about
8/10 - great movie, worth seeing in theatres and owning on blu-ray (would explore into the films universe if such a thing exists outside of the film itself)

... i honestly don't feel like defining this shit anymore, but the movie was good
