Makes sense though, the Battle School program spanned the entire world so of course they were pulling kids from various ethnicities. (Hey, Petra is white - Armenians are technically white, right?!) As for the other worlds, I think it was an established 'thing' that other planets got colonized by specific races - like Portugese on Lusitania and Chinese on Path. It really makes sense considering people would probably want to stick to specific ethnic groups to better understand each other, have less infighting and keep their own culture as intact as possible while still leaving Earth. I mean, it wouldn't do to send a bunch of people who inherently cannot get along ideologically to a new planet just to start blowing each other up again as soon as possible.

If anything, it's refreshing to see that the movie didn't get whitewashed and the original ethnicities of the children were kept intact.

Just as long as none of them are gay!

I know you're half joking, but come to think of it, I can only remember one homosexual character in his books: Zdorab, from the Homecoming series.

I'm going to guess that maybe, just maybe that might have something to do with his homophobia.

    you don't say

None of the characters I can remember from any Enderverse books were gay, and Homecoming is unlikely to ever get made into a movie. Maybe a Broadway play, but not a movie. Thus, whitewashing is something that could realistically happen; making the characters straight is not.

He wrote a book called Songmaster way back in '78. It is full of homosexuality. Seriously. It's one of the only novels I've read by him other than the Ender series (it wasn't a very well-written book either but putting that aside...) The wikipedia page on it even has a section on the theme of man/boy love lol.

What he wrote under the "Author's Commentary" section is kind of interesting, I guess.

Little late but I just saw this and was honestly surprised by how good of a job they did at condensing it up until the last 10 mins which made literally no sense within the terms of the movie and I feel was tacked on solely for the readers of the book, but in the worst way possible.

Bonzo being smaller than Ender also completely destroyed that entire relationship. The actor for Bonzo was perfect aside from his height though.

I hate to necro but I finally found a copy of this I did not pay any money for.

It was rushed and pretty terrible.

Battle School was bad. Battles were stupid.

Sorry again for the necro but this NEEDED to be 3 movies at least.

I was very disappointed in the movie, but after seeing the movie a second time (with lots of FF), I feel like this could be an amazing miniseries.

Definitely! 3 1.5 hour episodes could have done this easily. Intro/Trip to Battle School Battle School/Trip to command school Final Battle/Epilogue

Finally watched this. The mvie was an endless string of disappointments due to having read the book and completely skipped out on the nuances you're supposed to pick up on retrospectively.
The war is reduced to a single planet. The fellow commanders were supposed to be in the fleet heading towards the bugger planet as far as Ender knows and participating in the simulations. Petra eventually gets PTSD from all the death and the big sacrifice at the end is pathetic compared to the horror you're supposed to realize at what happened. They even had a scene that could have been used to show the brutality of war and completely botched it to make the deathcount lower and via making the drones explanation actually have drones.
They showed ender literally sacrificing the entire army of possibly millions of human lives on screen as anyone who read the book realized every ship had a real person and then they go and make the not-drones you were expecting actually be drones.
I get that it's still some heavy losses but it completely weakened the impact since you thought it was much worse. The people watching the "simulation" didn't even break out into a giant party as ender stood there confused. The revelation that the buggers might not be a threat for the audience came AFTER they all died, Ender didn't even have that whole I'll reveal why we shouldn't fight them argument before the final battle. Let's hide the giant bug aliens right next door where the military didnt explore outside their base for several decades to check for anything. The entire thing was just a bad execution.
This movie could be a study of how to come so far yet drop the ball at the climax of any scene.

Finally got around to watching this, and he's my issue with the movie. They glossed over the battle school waaaaay too much. All that training and tactic stuff was never explained in any way shape or form. The movie doesn't do a good job of explaining why his launchie buddies respect him at all. They just kinda do. As opposed to in the book where there was a damn good reason for it.

The basic plot was all there (except for the Locke/Demosthenes stuff), but the whole thing was very rushed and empty.

Thought they did a good almost great job with the movie. I have no idea about the books/ author not liking gays or none of that shit and the box office hurt so no sequel which dissapoints me quite a bit. 8 out of 10 from me.

Had I not read the book I would have been moderately entertained by what it was. I am not a big fan of Ender's Game(I know, burn the heretic!) But the amount of material that was cut out was downright appalling. I can't imagine that Card is all that pleased with the film. To accurately portray the book it should have been at least two parts.

Finally watched this last night. Never read the book, found the movie moderately entertaining. Although I felt like there was no big payoff or real surprises because the trailers and movie posters spoiled all that.
