God I entirely agree with this. I re-read Ender's Game last year, and it's a fantastic book. I think as a kid I missed out on alot of the allegory and got caught up more in the literal storyline, so I'm really glad I took the time to read it again. But Speaker for the Dead is just fucking amazing. I was a big fan of Xenocide though too... the trilogy compared to Star Wars in my mind. Ender's Game had a good stand-alone story arc, Speaker for the Dead just blew your fucking mind, and then Xenocide had little ewok thingys.

Strangely, though I recognize the merits of SftD, I like Ender's Game a lot more. Maybe because the school setting is just so much more relatable. Whatever it is though, it's a much stronger pull for me than Speaker.

I love how the Ender books are more about philosophy, while the Bean books focus on politics (and in an INTERESTING way!). They are both really good series.

Two topics I really enjoy and look for in movies is people who are incredibly smart/talented and space. If the book had had dinosaurs as well it would have hit the trifecta of things I used to love as a kid, though perhaps the aliens could be dinosaur'ish. I read the book only a few years ago too so on top of it just being good it involved a lot of topics I just loved.

Co-sign. Children of the Mind is fucking brillaint. Love the entire series. Speaker for the Dead is my favorite for sure though. I kinda hope they do an Ender's Shadow movie just because I /really/ want to see a good actor play Achilles. The intensity between him and Bean would make for such a good movie. At the same time I recognize that getting GOOD child actors is hard and having that many in one generation is nigh impossible. According to OSC that was one of the biggest issues with finding somebody to do this film.

I'm with you, I love SftD too but Ender's Games just grabbed me more.

This. The second book was a very different type of story, I thought. It seemed much slower paced that seemed far more of an intellectual read than Ender's Game, which felt more like a fast paced action novel. I've read Ender's Game a number of times, but Speaker for the Dead maybe ... twice? I was in high school when I read them both the first time; perhaps if I read them both for the first time again, I might have a different opinion. I got through Xenocide, and enjoyed it, although not as much. I know I read Children of the Mind, but hell if I can remember a damn thing about it...

The comics have been doing a good job of re-telling me the story and adding some additional dimensions to it. Re-reading Speaker for the Dead in graphic form was fantastic. I'm curious if they are going to go forward with Xenocide and Children of the Mind.

    This. All of this.

I've been excited about this movie since I first heard about it like 2005, when it was supposed to be out in 2008. Glad to hear it has an actual date.

I'm actually just finishing up Shadow of the Giant, after having read the other seven books like..six odd years ago.

As much as I'd like to see Ford in this movie, I just don't see him as Graff or Rackham...both characters have their softer sides, but are pretty hard on Ender, and I just don't think I could see Ford being Air Force One type of serious with Ender. I see Graff as looking somewhat like Brian Dennehy and Rackham as Rutger Hauer. IDK if either of those would work - Hauer probably would, but Dennehy might ham it up.

    Vaguely spoilery concerning CotM.
    Spoiler: show
Also, I never liked how we never really got to find out what happened to Val and gang on the new planet. Reminded me of how F. Herbert died, I'm assuming, having intended to write Dune 7 but leaving only notes which his son used to make money and completely whore out the franchise and fuck him and all the shitty books he and Anderson wrote. Card - Write a sequel to CotM before you croak, pls.

Shadows in Flight is still in the works, and to my understanding takes place after CotM and ties the Ender/Shadow stories. Actually according to wiki-fu it's being split into Shadows in Flight which will be a Bean/shadow story, and Shadows Alive which ties the two stories together.
edit: Shadows in Flight blurb thing, out in January!!

How the fuck would it take place after CotM? That's like 3040ish years after Shadow of a Giant. I DON'T UNDERSTAND. I would be supremely pissed if he was just like "LOL THEY NEVER FOUND A CURE FOR BEAN."

One of the biggest things that needs to be resolved is the species that created the Descolada. If this book does that I'll be happy. But I don't see that happening if Bean is involved in any way shape or form because of the massive time-gap.
