I think that the background resolution is the resolution it draws FFXI at (within your window). Some people like to oversample (set this higher than their monitor is capable of displaying), but I don't get it. Also, you will probably want to keep the same aspect ratio between your monitor resolution and window size.

Oversampling smooths the 'jaggies' around the edges of objects. It's usually only done on the edges of things to improve speed, but the only way to get the effect in FFXI is via oversampling the entire display.

    Take a look at : http://images4.wikia.nocookie.net/__...Resolution.jpg

Notice the jagged steps around the border between the player model and the background, particularly in the undersampled and 1:1 image. They're not really noticeable in the oversampled image.

By contrast, the background texture and the player model itself are much less effected by this.

So pretty much, it makes things look better. It's worth doing if your PC can handle it.

I wrote a long thing about this a while ago. Oversampling does help smooth the jaggies, but it also does something else. It seems to change the distance that the LoD system functions on. If you're not familiar with the term, level of detail determines which texture and sometimes model is used when rendering an object. Its purpose is to optimize game appearance vs resource consumption (what's the point of rendering something in full detail when it's so far away you can only see a few pixels?) I think it would make a great windower feature, the ability to control that distance. You could make your game look much better at a much lower cost in terms of system resources.

So I went to the dark side. I tried installing it in 2007 but at that point my 16 year old mind was like lolfuckthis and I gave up.

Trying again now. And I have several questions. Keep in mind that I sort of know what I am doing with computers, but not with code or anything like that (i.e. even the simplest of matlab codes are like foreign languages to me)

    1. Finally got it to run correctly on my own (resolution issues) running it thru GUI w/ run as administrator. Now that those resolution issues are fixed, I noticed that TParty's numbers for my TP/target HP are all fucked up. Completely wrong position. I read that I need to patch menu resolution with overlay resolution, but won't that make my in-game text fucking tiny as shit? (background resolution is 1920x1200, menus 1280x720)

    2. How do I get plugins to load automatically on launch (infobar, attainment)? Or in-game? I read the readme but didn't see it. Likely oversight.

    3. Any good parsers? This is a big one because I like knowing how I performed.

    1) I don't know how to fix this. It happens to me when I force the test server to load with windower because my window size is different than windower is expecting.
    2) Go to Windower/scripts and look for "init.txt". There is probably going to be a section that starts with a bunch of "load" commands. Just drop "load infobar" and "load attainment" in there and they will be loaded as long as they're in your Windower/plugins folder.
    3) Google "Kparser" and download the newest version from the google project page.

My main use for TParty was to see mob HP%, forgot that infobar had it.
I figured out the init.txt, i think it will work but haven't actually logged out to try it yet, but thanks for the help
I downloaded kparser but when I try to run it (idk if I'm even running it correctly) but it gets an error and force closes

edit: all is well aside from the stupid TParty text shit. same thing happens with statustimers, its acting like all the status icons are about half their size and all the timers squeeze in, its lame

got parser to work and i'm losing my mind. i parsed dyna and it's awesome seeing my stats. PARSE ALL THE THINGS

Might be a long shot, but try defaulting your menu resolution.

    This

Go into ffxiconfig and set your menu resolution to the -- setting (default for chosen resolution) and your tparty should be in correct position.

PetFoodAlpha has an interview on their site with someone from Windower:
    http://radio.gamerescape.com/2012/07...o-of-windower/

Kind of interesting. Talks about the people involved, how they work, and what ever happened to Taj...

I always wondered, what happens with partial oversampling?

Say I play in 1920x1080 resolution, and then use oversampling in FFXI set at 2048x2048.
I think it's the way I used to play on my old PC, except that the basic resolution was 1620x1050 or something like that

You're going to get something inconsistent and overall just...bad.

If you're going to set your BG res higher than your window size, set it to 2x. Anything less isn't going to have a marked visual improvement over 1:1, and anything more is just wasting cpu time, such as setting it to 4x, which produces exactly the same results as 2x at 4 times the processing cost.

So for a 1920x1080 (I miss my 1200) display, set it to 3840x2160?

From what I recall there was some kerfluffle about square background resolutions and how it's scaled to square powers of two anyway as to why that was not the best course of action. I'm not qualified to go in depth on the technical details myself, just something I remember reading a while back when this sort of thing was new.

If it were actually about powers of 2 then it would simply crash if it's not 128, 256, 512, 1024, 2048, 4096 etc. I believe all this cares about is divisible by 8 or possibly 2, but there's no real way to know without the source or being bored and testing. I do know that most renderers crash out if textures are non powers of 2 though, probably because it's easier to do render calculations by far.

Interestingly, some other PS2 ports use this same "background resolution" nonsense, I particularly remember Silent Hill 3 doing it as well.

As of today, Im no longer a part of the windower team. Its been fun helping the community but I feel I have no purpose anymore with them.

If anyone wants to read the topic: http://forums.windower.net/topic/213...-my-departure/

As for that, in the next months, I will probably quit the game too. Without the team, I feel I dont need to play anymore.

    Its been a blast.
