Games back in the day needed cheat codes?
Beat Contra without dying, fuck a Konami code.
If you had godlike reflexes and pattern recognition, no.
If you were average Joe (or Jane I guess) like me, cheat codes were occasionally nice to have, especially since you couldn't save or start from a checkpoint. Doing the whole game over again if you get stuck on one thing kind of blows, especially if it's pretty far in, so blowing through the stuff you know you could already do with some effort to save some time was nice. Although you generally had to use a code that would give you an advantage at your stuck part too, which was bad.
Honestly the only reason NES games were harder than many recent games was the inability to save. Being able to save and start at your checkpoint/savepoint whenever you want kills the idea of 'lives' anyway and means you don't have to play the whole game over again.
only reason to buy: demo discs.
This actually makes me a little sad. Whenever I think of that magazine it reminds me of Metal Gear Solid. I think that's the last game I bought a magazine on before the internetz changed our lives forever.
Cardboard box, never forget
Took about 5 hours to figure it out when I broke my NES back out in college to beat all my old games. Wasn't actually as hard as I thought - give it a shot, you may be surprised. Once you get rapid-fire spread you are pretty goddamn unstoppable - the most dangerous thing in the game is accidentally grabbing a different weapon and being stuck with it for a while.
Oh Gamepro. How I'll miss your paper relevance.
Protip: Use the internet.
I used to beat Contra all the time without the Konami code.
Protip: Don't fucking suck at games.
Byebye Gamepro, I'll miss your previews and pro-reviews.
Agree 100%, maybe my memories of Gamepro are before they even had demo discs (SNES/Genesis focus) but with PC Gamer demo disc were amazing as it was only way to get your hands on a game to try it before it came out, there was no way I was going to wait days to download a demo only waiting for it to fail at 90%. The Myst demo I remember in particular as having huge hype around it.
Gamepro sucked, EGM was always better.
I have about 15 years of their mags in my garage.
There's 15 years worth of virginity in there, boys.
That Megarace 2 video is a crock. It was less about driving the road and more about steering with the camera. Not a bad game overall though, if a bit bland compared to Carmageddon.
I had gamepro and EGM subs for years, had one or two others for short times but I had those two the longest. That was how I got my reviews and previews.
I remember a preview for a new final fantasty, the article said FF MMCXIVI or something like that poking fun at yet another FF.
