Our Government is in the process of introducing an omnibus crime bill. Rolled into this bill is a piece of invasive, costly and poorly thought-out legislation. This would allow them to spy on Canadian citizens' online activities with no warrant.

Telecom companies will be required to store names, telephone numbers, emails, IP addresses, downloads and more. Then install back doors into their networks so that law enforcement has access to this information. This will be costly and the companies will pass that cost on to you.

Recently, the federal privacy commissioner Jennifer Stoddart was quoted, saying "at no time have Canadian authorities provided the public with any evidence or reasoning to suggest that CSIS or any other Canadian law enforcement agencies have been frustrated in the performance of their duties as a result of shortcomings attributable to current law."

Then why do they need this legislation? Why should we risk allowing our sensitive information to be easily accessed? How well can this information actually be safe guarded?

There were two recent instances this year. B.C. medical records were lost and that lead to a costly investigation. The Canadian Government themselves admitted to having 3 key departments compromised by sources from China. This legislation is invasive, costly and compromises our security.

Ya this has been in the works for a while. The biggest thing that kills me is this isn't even really all that conducive to Conservative ideals. This is going to cost tax dollars it's BS that the party that wants to cut taxes want to bring something like this in. To me it just stinks of the beginning of introducing and enforcing internet piracy laws. Otherwise there would be very little motivation to bring it in. At least that's my theory. Obviously there's more things involved like money transactions that may not being taxed and such but still it starts with this. Then they'll try to introduce a bill like they are down in the states where the Government can just block or shut down websites they don't like.

All this crap is making me wonder how hard it would be to make my own internet, Well that and wonder just how much encryption one can inject into the system to make the cost of translating everyday transactions too much for the authorities to handle.
Just imagine if big brother had to spend an hour each to translate basic email when spying alone.

It would cost absolutely nothing to encrypt your email well enough that no one could ever unencrypt it. Outside of CSI, proper encryption is not possible to crack in a realistic time (before the end of the world using current technology, and even accounting for advances, still never within a life time).

Nothing is unbreakable. it's just a matter of does a person care enough to waste time decrypting it. 6 months after something unbreakable comes out a random kid breaks it. That's besides the point though. The idea was to make it too expensive to spy on even the normal everyday transactions for what Canada's government is attempting to be feasible. The biggest advantage is that these countries aren't China so human rights should theoretically get in the way of a major crackdown.

Not true. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_time_pad Those are 100% impossible to crack. The only way to decrypt it is to have the physical pad.

And plenty of others are unbreakble, given current technology (including our inability to survive once the earth is gone), ya know...since it'd take hundreds of trillions of years to break).

lol. 3 of the most used encryption methods are more than 10 years old, and despite countless people trying to crack them constantly, it hasn't happened. And more than likely, it never will happen. And guess what? Even if it does, data can be encrypted multiple times with different methods, all of which would need to be broke before the data could be read.

I know TV likes to show encryption just being a small hassle for law enforcement, that is easily broken in a matter of a few hours, or days. But in real life, that doesn't happen. In real life, nuclear launch codes can be encrypted and safely posted to the internet.
