I think I saw something about the NCAA allowing teams accepting PSU transfers to go over scholarship limits? Because the question was asked about Ohio State and USC since they're on probation right now.

Part of such a harsh set of penalties is to give a warning shot at every other NCAA school so that the situation never happens again. Thankfully this allows (i think) any Penn State Student Athlete to transfer and retain any eligibility. It also apparently allows any current football student athlete to keep his scholorship even if he chooses to no longer play. Its a nice balance of punishing the school and the legacy while allowing any of the kids involved in the school sports program a fair means of continuing on however they wish.

I don't think this was necessary to ensure no other schools repeated this scenario lol. Have you watched the news over the past few months?

The reasoning for vacating wins, as I understand from a radio interview I listened to this morning, is because Penn State willingly covered up the scandal to avoid bad publicity. The bad publicity likely would have caused trouble for recruiting (who wants to go play for a school in the middle of a raping little boys scandal??), so by covering it up Penn State was keeping a "competitive advantage", which is a big no-no to the NCAA.

Now to play devil's advocate here, one could argue the same thing about Bobby Bowden hiding his colon cancer from everyone but his family and doctor during his last two seasons at FSU. (Who would want to come play for a coach with cancer that might drop dead anytime??) But I guess the NCAA is making a distinction behind a coach with a personal medical problem and a coaching staff/university organization that protected a pedophile.

This. The NCAA claims to have the best interests of the student body and their athletes at heart, but it's just an empty statement.

The wins vacating thing is just an empty punishment for me. Whoo, look at us! We punished them by making them vacate wins for seasons that really don't mean anything now! All those schools they beat in those seasons can sure compete for national championships .. oh wait, those seasons are already done, played, and players no longer with the teams. You can't replay any of that.

Throw the book at the fools who hid/condoned the deplorable acts by Sandusky. This should be a court issue, not an NCAA one. Yes, Sandusky committed the crimes while using his position at Penn State, and Paterno is just as culpable according to the Freeh report. What about that dude who saw Sandusky fondle those kids in the shower? Why isn't he being held accountable for not going to the proper authorities? (unless I missed something)

In short, I have a lot of problems with this - NCAA I feel is overstepping their bounds, and quite frankly, should have left this matter to the courts. It's a criminal matter, and leave it at that.

This isn't a culture. It was one administration. I don't think we have a subset of universities covering up egregious criminal activities.

Exactly... the sanctions are completely warranted.

Why did the cover-up occur? To protect the football program. If the culture is such that the football program takes precedence over child molestation, the problems are deeper than the four people charged.

Of course it is a shame that innocent players and students feel the effects of the sanctions, but there is no avoiding that.

The culture is that JoePa and PSU football were infallible. Students still protecting the statue after the Freeh report is proof of this.
