My One Year

Exactly 1 year ago at 5pm CST on Dec 4th I was being wheeled into the OR for my transplant. At 7pm they cut me open and started the surgery. And at 12:30am Dec 5th I was wheeled out of the OR after a successful double lung transplant.

It might not mean a lot to you guys but it means the world to me because this was a year I never expected to have and I am thankful for every single day I've been given, despite the broken back, the lack of doctors giving a shit, and the bout of Rejection I had several months back. It's all been an amazing experience and I even got my first real job and I'm excited for it.

So ya, just wanted to say that.

Yes, I do have CF. There is no getting rid of it just because I have new lungs. It's just no longer in the lungs. Rest of my body is still fucked.

The GI stuff is pretty awful from my limited knowledge of the disease. I did see a patient with CF who was days away from his 40th birthday a month ago though. There was a really big breakthrough study/article in new england journal (most well respective med journal) on CF treatment a few weeks back. Tried to find a free version in case you cared but no luck. Also just found your blog, I thought the "sex change" part during the doc time out was a nice touch haha

There is a lot of research going on right now with CF. One of the doctors I'm trying to woo into letting me study a PhD is working on a study related to GI diseases from CF complications.

Looking at your pics I can only imagine how tough it was for you, but being that young you're lucky; your body will recover much better than most others would.

It's one of the cool things about my transplant. On day 10 I was getting ready to go home. If it wasn't for my body not taking kindly to Cyclosporin I would have been out of there in a new record.

Also, the surgeon said to me a few days after transplant that he's never seen anyone take to new lungs so promisingly before. I hope that is good news and gives me more than the 2 and a half years my friend had. Though, even if that's all I get, I'll enjoy it all the same.

That's quite the ordeal. To think that I'm afraid of getting root canals etc. Here's to hoping you live until your 90's.
