^ I would assume so. I'm am sure there will be nodes to previous MGS games for people who have played them and for fan service, but I highly doubt this is gonna be a heavily story driven game. Didn't they even say the story is lite?

I doubt you'd need to play previous MGS games to know what's going on. The whole point of the spinoff was for Kojima to be assured the story was more or less self-contained. Anything else he would have done himself, i.e. Gray Fox story.

You probably just won't be able to appreciate certain nuances the developers would surely put in as a nod to previous games.

Pretty much. At the end of MGS4 the story pretty much concluded itself (any "sequels" are now prequels to the story). Not to spoil an entire game series, but pretty much any new MGS game has it's own universe to fill and not worry too much about past characters or events. You'll miss out on the significance of some cameos I'm sure, like Sunny who was posted a page or so ago, but from what I've seen no prior knowledge of the series is needed to enjoy it.

Sunny was a fucking genius! She developed FoxAlive. She was raised by Snake and Otacon, (after being held prisoner from birth) forced to live in seclusion so she wasn't very great with social situations.
Sunny is a great character, I hope they don't fuck her up.
