Nice to see that I wasn't the only one scared shitless.

Keycard thing sounds like a glitch.. I avoided the bloater (kinda by accident), which was a great decision. There's a loop (I think through like a kitchen or something) that allowed me to run past it.

I had a shrapnel bomb, two shotgun shells, one magnum round, and three arrows. I pulled that cord and peaced the fuck out. Was scurry as hell.

The only glitch I came across was the shootout at the dam. Once I cleared everyone the door wouldn't open to move onto the next area.

Yeah, I'm with you guys on this part being scary as balls. I was pretty damn bummed when I ended up down there.

I'm hoping the keycard thing was a glitch from reloading the encounter after dying since I never made it to the door the first time (where I had already interacted with the door + keycard before turning on the generator). I'm thinking the game doesn't keep those interactions flagged when it reloads that encounter and the game might require that you try the door before using the security panel each time.

I'm probably going to spend a good amount of time practice-running an alternate path to it... that or placing some bombs where I normally get attacked by the Stalkers.

    muchos gracias~

    In the flooded hotel basement:

    - I cleared the entire floor of all mobs.
    - I checked exit door, needed keycard.
    - I explored further and found keycard (still no mobs).
    - I returned to the door and it said I now needed to start the generator.
    - I start generator, which immediately attracts 2 Stalkers and 1 Bloater.

This confrontation kept getting the best of me, the Bloater usually getting way too close to me by the time I could deal with the two seemingly unavoidable Stalkers.

If I run full-speed straight for the door, I'll end up getting ambushed by the Stalkers just before the hallway. If I survive that, when I approach the door, there is no option to use the keycard on the security panel, only to fail at using the doorknob itself.

My last attempt before I called it a night, I managed to somehow very quickly kill both Stalkers just before the hallway where they ambush me. Then, I ran to the door with good distance from the Bloater, but I couldn't use the keycard, so I crouched down in that dead-end only to have the Bloater come down the hall and know exactly where I was. I ended up putting a few shotgun blasts in his face before my PS3 locked up (lol).

I read somewhere that it's best to sneak past this Bloater, but the split-second I start that generator, the two Stalkers are aware of me and by the time I can dispatch them, the Bloater is well-aware of my location. Is there a specific path I can take to avoid these mobs once I start the Generator? It just feels like there's nothing I can do to avoid the Stalkers and they take too long to kill... Would nail bombs near the doorway to the Generator be the best method?

I just hope the keycard thing isn't some terribly unfortunate glitch.

    WAT DO?
on my first playthrough i hit the generator, ran up the ramp then backwards into the bathroom facing out so nothing could catch me from behind. i waited till i could combo a molotov on at least two stalkers, shotgunned down any stalkers that were left, then tossed a couple nailbombs directly at the bloater as soon as he showed up. was pretty easy and even got to pick one up from his body.

on my survivor playthrough i mostly did the same thing, except when the bloater showed up in the doorway, i took the door to my left, jumped down onto the ramp, went up then ran straight down the hall and then all the way to the door. i wasn't sure i had killed all the stalkers, and it sounded like the bloater was right behind me (even though they're pretty slow), so it was quite terrifying having to try and open the door, scan, then open again.

i believe that you need to try to open the door first before you're allowed to scan. so if your plan is to run, what you can do is to get your failed attempt out of the way first, then head back and start the generator.

I can't tell you what exactly I did (re: shitted pants) but I never once ran into those stalkers. I do remember, facing the generator, that I took the right-hand path around. I put into Listen Mode and saw what was ready to assrape me so I booked it into tunnel-vision mode and forgot everything I did until I made it past that door.

Also - tried door before I did generator which prompted me to find electricity basically, so that helped. That reminds me of another shit scenario -

At the end of Ish's sewers, the stand-off with the horde, I remember it taking me about 10+ tries to get right. By the final try I thought I was about to fail since a Clicker was just about to beat me down when the scene cut and I was safely making my way out. I think that is also what happens when you use the card-reader: the scene will cut to you opening it and being safe.

That was hard for me until I decided to run away. I pulled it, then ran up the back ramp and up to the door. You shouldn't see any clickers until the hallway past the door, which are easy to deal with via shotgun or defensive shiv (if you have the ability yet which you should).

This is what I did. I didn't kill shit. Ran up the ramp in that room. Straight across then up the hall to the door. Shipping my pants all the way.

Edit: My wife reminded me that I did kill the guys that ran into the room immediately before running.

Yeah, that ended up being the problem. When you reload that encounter, it un-flags you as having tried to open the door and you can't use the security panel until you jiggle the door handle for some stupid reason. So, even though you respawn in front of the generator, it's best to go up and touch the door first so you don't have an extra step when you are trying to peace the shit out of that nightmare.

Also, the ramp just to the right of the generator is indeed the best path up there as you can side-step into the laundry room to hide, then traipse on down the hall unnoticed after they all gather to dance around the noisy generator.

Honestly unless it's a scripted event, it's better to not engage a bloater. They are just too ridiculous to take down. Took 2 molotov and 2 rifle rounds to drop on normal, that's freaking stupid.

FYI I never even tried the door. Randomly ran into the generator, started it, killed everything, scanned card and went in.

Flamethrowers melt bloaters in seconds. It's ridiculous.

Sadly, by the time you get flamethrower you don't meet a lot of bloaters. On your first play through anyway.

Yeah there's maybe 5 bloaters after you get the flamethrower, and 4 of em are in the same hallway. I just avoided the lot of em in that sequence. I suspect though that fire burns off their armor and their insides have the same hp as a clicker. Just a theory.

After a molotov, I find them much easier to get through. But it's not hard to sneak by them at all, it's just the uncounterable instakill thats annoying.

Fire actually does make Bloaters more susceptible to damage (makes them crispy and brittle).
