I probably should have been more specific about certs. The entry level certs like A+ and N+ are great for getting your foot in the door, but are typically useless after that. Certs like CCNP (or higher) and VCP can be helpful to keep 10+ years into your career. If your company is a Cisco/MS/VMWare gold partner, you'll be required to keep those certs up to date.
