Right, we are getting on the same page here. Now just understand that neoliberalism refers to specific economic policies and not some abstract concepts about free market. Not only are those specific economic policies are ideologically incompatible, like you said, neoliberalism was never designed to be anything resembling free market as it is simply state capitalism.

Just remember this all started when I commented on your statement when you referred to "neoliberals being more free-market then X." If by freemarket you meant state capitalism, then I understand where this confusion came from.

The concrete policies advocated by neoliberals argue specifically for the the minimilization of state intervention in micromarkets (what constitutes an aggregate or quasi aggregate intervention is a topic of debate amongst them), which is in turn justified by classical theory of equilibrium/welfare economics which illustrates net surplus losses that arise from market distortions, simultaneously accounting for neoliberals' overriding concern for economic "efficiency". This, among other things, obviously. So when people in Europe abuse the term "neoliberal" in derision, they mean that someone has just advocated laissez faire (free market) policy and has offended their sensibilities. Incidentally the word is very much in fashion over there to describe bungled monetary fiscal policy even if it isn't here.

The moniker state capitalism is a little silly for neoliberals since they don't really like import subsitution or other similar national programs of industrial supervision, nor do they wish to position the state itself as the principle actor in the economy, which are things that we refer to as consumately state capitalist. ie. India and Japan to a certain extent, Brazil, China, the oil rich second world, (incidentally the most successful examples of national growth in recent economic history) etc., not the neoliberal centre right of Europe and North America. So basically no true scottsman about sums it up really. Where did all these fringe ideologues come from anyway jeeze

Anyway, Gingrich was apparently talking today about virtually arresting "radical" federal judges. Saying shit like that, I can't ever imagine him winning the primary, so I figure I'll post it in here instead of the Obama thread.

Gingrich: Capitol Police Could Arrest ‘Radical’ Judges

Newt Gingrich on Sunday hammered at the nation’s judiciary system, saying that if a court’s decision was out of step with American popular opinion, it should be ignored.

There’s “no reason the American people need to tolerate a judge that out of touch with American culture,” Gingrich said on CBS’ Face the Nation, referring to a case where a judge ruled that explicit references to religion were barred from a high school graduation ceremony. And Gingrich recently has said judges should have to explain some of their decisions before Congress.

Host Bob Schieffer asked Gingrich how he planned to enforce that. Would you call in the Capitol Police to apprehend a federal judge, he asked.

“If you had to,” Gingrich said. “Or you’d instruct the Justice Department to send the U.S. Marshall in.”

A judge should have to explain his or her radical decisions, Gingrich emphasized again. Gingrich’s tough words against the judiciary branch have drawn fire from even conservatives. Former attorney general under President George W. Bush, Michael Mukasey, told Fox News that Gingrich’s proposals were “dangerous” and “totally irresponsible.”

Gingrich claims his tough stance is part of a key question going into the 2012 elections: “Do you want to move towards American exceptionalism, reassert the Constitution, reassert the nature of America, or do you, in fact, want to become a secular, European, sort of beaurocratic socialist society?”

Paul leads in Iowa!!!

Newt Gingrich's campaign is rapidly imploding, and Ron Paul has now taken the lead in Iowa. He's at 23% to 20% for Mitt Romney, 14% for Gingrich, 10% each for Rick Santorum, Michele Bachmann, and Rick Perry, 4% for Jon Huntsman, and 2% for Gary Johnson.

Reminds me when Paul won back in Febuary with thousands of votes, media decided to report on a poll with only 52 selected republicans, Paul got 0%. Not to mention the Iowa straw polls...

Even talk show hosts have just deleted Paul from polls all together when he wins.
