The reason why Presidents are elected is that people are corruptable and thus needs to be removed from office for that. That's why the US do not have a dictatorship, else an all-knowing uncorruptable prophet should rule indefinatly.

I said we don't have direct democracy, not that we don't have a dictatorship. That is to say, we elect representatives (Congressmen, Senators, and the President) rather than pass law directly through popular vote referendum.

In doing so people confer the rights on a representative to act on their behalf. He can act contrary to the will of the people according to his judgment. The people can vote him out if they feel that he has made multiple errors of judgment, but the point is that at some level a representative must always use judgment.

Not all decisions come down merely to "choosing a policy based on truth vs. belief." Unless you are omniscient there are multitudes of things you will be unsure of and you will have to rely on judgment.

Is passing this bill a good thing? Well the only way to know for sure is to compare what will happen under passing it, and what would happen without passing it. That prediction will inherently be tinged by beliefs. Therefore a representative's beliefs will always come into play because they are integral to judgment.

Funny thing is, I agree with test123 on that point. One part of fixing our deficit problem is a significant reduction in military spending, which is by far the best thing Ron Paul wants to do.
