I remember reading this book/writing a term paper on it for high school and hating it.
Then again, I remember watching Leo DiCaprio act and hating it, until Inception, so things can change!

Interesting cast, could be good, could be awful.

I'd make some comment about how of all the books in the world this is the least movie deserving but then again Hollywood etc.

It's one of my favorite books of all time, but I in no way support it being read in high school. It's among several other books, like Catcher In The Rye, that I love, but don't think should be taught at such a low level. They're good books, but most high school students don't have the ability to really understand the books. Also, when was the last time you really enjoyed something you had to write a paper on? It's not that long, maybe give it another shot now.

No...The Great Gatsby is the book people reference when they want to sound intellectual; meanwhile everyone else in the room laughs at them.

Ditto. Meanwhile, I think I heard my old high school English teacher jizz in his pants, which subsequently makes me throw up a little. Dude was way too much in love with this book.

Well, not to preach but Gatsby is an amazing story.
It is the quintessential American novel. It captures the period in which it is set and its full of symbolism that teachers love to jizz about. Also it's not overwritten in such a way that it goes over a high school students head. Oh yeah, Fitzgerald was an American author as well /more teacher jizz.

Oh yeah, Gatsby is the 1% as well. Even more relevant...

This is how I feel. It's a good book and the trailer looked good.

It's Leo. You cant go wrong. All I can see now seeing Tobey Mcguire is the trailer from Tropic Thunder though.

Two weeks ago when I wrote my final paper for Native American History on the book 50 Miles from Tomorrow (good book, autobiography of an Alaskan Native) XD

But I agree, now that you mention it: Gatsby, Catcher in the Rye, and a couple others, including Flowers for Algernon and Of Mice and Men, were all things we had to read in junior/senior year. I wasn't a fan of any of them, possibly because I prefer fantasy/sci-fi instead of general fiction, but I did find all those books unnecessarily disturbing and couldn't/didn't want to appreciate them for what they were. At the same time, I think it's important for schools to introduce kids to what's in those books, so idk. I just don't usually enjoy general fiction, even now (and sadly, general or historical fiction were considered the end-all be-all of literature in high school...no fun stuff...boo).

Loved the book when I was made to read it in high school, and I like all the actors involved. This probably means I'm going to hate the outcome unfortunately <_>.

Never liked Baz Lurhman. Hopefully he doesn't make it weird or shoot it like a music video.

The year-end prestige movie season was looking especially thick this year, with Peter Jackson’s The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, Tom Hooper’s Les Misérables, Kathryn Bigelow’s Zero Dark Thirty, and Quentin Tarantino’s Django Unchained all clamoring for a piece of the box office. As of today, however, one filmmaker who’ll be sitting out that bloodthirsty competition is Baz Luhrmann.

Warner Bros. has just moved Lurhmann’s F. Scott Fitzgerald adaptation The Great Gatsby from December 25 into Summer 2013 in a surprising but understandable move. The Great Gatsby looked at one point like it’d be one of the most formidable contenders in this winter’s awards season, but it seems execs are hoping that a summer release will translate to a wider each.

The studio announced the release date shift today, via a press release from execs Dan Fellman and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg. “Based on what we’ve seen, Baz Luhrmann’s incredible work is all we anticipated and so much more. It truly brings Fitzgerald’s American classic to life in a completely immersive, visually stunning and exciting way,” said Fellman. “We think moviegoers of all ages are going to embrace it, and it makes sense to ensure this unique film reaches the largest audience possible.” Kwan Vandenberg added, “The responses we’ve had to some of the early sneak peeks have been phenomenal, and we think The Great Gatsby will be the perfect summer movie around the world.”

With its literary pedigree and its award-winning cast (including Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, and Leonardo DiCaprio), The Great Gatsby seems a more natural fit for winter than summer. On the other hand, it could work as a nice bit of counter-programming against the usual glut of action sequels. Other Warner Bros. pictures set to open next summer include The Hangover Part III (May 24), Man of Steel (June 14), Pacific Rim (July 12), and the 300 sequel (August 2).

One of only two books I've ever read out of thousands and completely hated.
