Backpacking/Traveling Questions

Essentially I've decided I would like to travel to Spain. I'm going for mainly climbing, and to adventure. I've never traveled seriously, and have been given lot's of information from friends, but nothing really solid. I hear hostels are good, and backpacking can be expensive, but the real good details are still vague.

I would like to stay at least a month, I can do more if it is plausible. As far as destinations, I've just kinda broadly gathered together three places, Mallorca, Catalonia, and Riglos. As of right now I would like to stay mainly in Mallorca; which is an island(dunno if that makes a difference).

So essentially, what should I do for food, shelter, cheapest ways to travel etc? I have plenty of gear to camp, and can dirtbag it pretty well. I can also dumpster dive like a pro, but I don't know how it works in Spain. Also, I don't know Spanish what so ever.

Any info would be appreciated; I'm a noob at traveling!

My brother hitch hiked from Prague to Morocco few years back and made a longer stop in Spain. He's a rock climber, and I know he stopped somewhere in the south to climb. At that time there was a hippie colony that let him and his two friends to live with them for free. I could try to ask him what it was if you'd be interested.

May just end up going during a warm/not rainy time so that I can camp everywhere I go.

I'd say the biggest money saver when I backpack is just going to the market/store and buying food to prepare yourself. If you get cured meats / cheeses that won't spoil right away and some bread and vegetables, you can have food for the rest of the day. Markets are my favorite place though when I travel, they let you see and experience local life, and usually the food is amazing.
