Hey everyone!
I'm the type of guy that generally doesn't think about stuff like this until 30 seconds before midnight on the 31st and then makes something stupid up right before midnight, but I remembered this year so I thought it might be useful to remind others.
So what is your 2012 resolution going to be, and were you successful with your 2011 resolution?
My 2012 resolution is going to be to publish a peer reviewed paper. It's not entirely under my control, but it's also unfair to say that I have no effect on it at all. So I'm going to work as hard as I can and try to push one out there.
My 2011 resolution was to stop using Shampoo/Conditioner/Soap (except on my hands/armpits) after my current bottle of shampoo ran out. My hair used to feel kind of like fine cat hair after shampoo/drying, but now it feels like dog hair. I like dogs and I like not buying/using shampoo, so it's win/win.
I still wash it every day (just rub my head under the shower for a few minutes), so I'm not saving that much time and you can definitely tell if I've skipped a day, but I like the texture better now and I dislike unnecessary steps. Also, the girlfriend approves of its new smell/texture and I haven't had any kind of dandruff in a year. It kind of makes sense if you think about it. Shampoo = take all the oils out of your hair / remove your scalp's protection against drying out. Conditioner = put oils back on your head. Why bother? My experience seems to indicate that it doesn't really matter.
The "no-soap" thing has not resulted in any visible change to anything about me, so fuck soap. I do still use it to de-stink my pits in the summer and in the bathroom. Acne isn't much of a problem for me anymore, but I wonder what would have happen if I'd never used soap on my face as a kid/adolescent. Removing the oils with soap could cause a gradual increase in oil production that culminates in oily acne skin.
I've heard of other people doing this and having a kind of rough transition where they become oil monsters for a month, but that wasn't how it went with me. I had a brief transition period where my hair felt like it was getting thicker/my face was oily and then reached steady state in about two weeks.
Anyway, how about you guys?
