The CIA and the U.S. military may have a serious security flaw to deal with if an Iranian engineer's story proves to be true. Speaking to Christian Science Monitor (CSM), he detailed how a team of specialists from his country hacked into a U.S. spy drone's GPS navigator in order to capture it. That's the same one the U.S. government claimed has landed in Iran's territory in early December due to a malfunction.

The Iranian specialists reportedly figured out that the RQ-170 Sentinel's weakest point is its GPS by examining previously downed American drones back in September. Using this knowledge, they designed a trap for one of the drones doing reconnaissance work in the country: "By putting noise [jamming] on the communications, you force the bird into autopilot. This is where the bird loses its brain," the engineer says. The team then simply programmed it to "land on its own where [they] wanted it to." The engineer asserts that the whole process is as easy as hacking into a Google account. The attack was ultimately successful, leading the unmanned vehicle to land in Iran instead of its home base in Afghanistan.

A 2003 study on GPS vulnerability indicates that the U.S. military has known about the problem for nearly a decade. If the RQ-170 in Iran's possession was indeed hacked, it means the susceptibility is yet to be fixed. This isn't the first time a U.S. drone's security was compromised: back in 2009, videos sent by stealth drones to their ground control stations were intercepted by Iraqi insurgents. And earlier this year, a virus had infected not one, but a whole fleet of unmanned vehicles.

While I would like to think they wouldn't make it as easy as the quote in the OP makes it sound, I hardly think that they would have any real fool proof way of preventing the capture of hardware employed in the field, no matter how advanced.

I'm reasonably certain no country ever wants it's spy gear captured, and do what they can to prevent it, but that doesn't mean they have any realistic way of "not allowing" it to happen. It would be pretty arrogant to believe we were capable of creating gear we could employ in the field with a 0% chance of it being damaged in some way and captured.

I would like to be shocked, but it's obviously just an excuse to pursue an agenda. Acknowledging that it was debunked would mean they would have to find another excuse, and people aren't going to buy another unsubstantiated claim that "they have WMDs". (Not that they could do much about it whether they believed it or not, I guess.)

I know right, because the Iranian regime isn't interested primarily in it's own survival. No, they exist simply to nuke Israel, killing off the Israeli Arab (Palestinians who weren't ethnically cleansed in 48') as well. Oh and ensuring their own immediate destruction directly afterwards.

Talk is cheap anyway. We have invaded and occupied the countries surrounding Iran. Killing anywhere from 100K (minimum) to 1 million people in Iraq. And Israel is the only 'Western' colonial-settler State in the 21st century that lords over millions of people without any sovereignty. We withdraw from UNESCO after the Palestinians join a book club. We do jack-shit when Israel expands it's Jewish colonies.

There is no comparison. This is about regional strategic domination. If Iran gets a nuke it would threaten our hegemony in the region (I guess?).
