Story as I've heard it is at the top of the thread, which I find plausible. Without going into any detail as to why I will say one thing that makes me believe it aside from my own knowledge:
If this drone had really lost link "naturally" as they sometimes do, there would have been 120 Rangers, a multitude of A-10's and F-18's and god knows what else on their way to get it. When it loses link, it flies home. When it crashes, it crashes. It doesn't fly to an Iranian airfield and land in great condition, so like I said there would have been people getting this thing unless there was no way to get it; eg it didn't crash or lose link naturally.
Whatever. Let's continue to lying to the world or they'll think we've lost our spot as #1 superpower because those brown people don't have technology amirite?
When I first heard of this my first thought was it was deliberately handed over to Iran in some elaborate attempt to get intel on their more sensitive facilities, say by some camera running off a separate/hidden power source.
Then I remembered how a few months ago the Taliban were found to be equipped with tv screens that gave a direct video feed of nearby drones from their unencrypted, broadcasted video signal . So I'm going to go with the theory that Lockheed Martin are run by incompetents that never envisioned it might be up against clever people.
From the sound of it it seems like everything but the control signals are unencrypted, so jamming any transmission combined with spoofing GPS coordinates was a clever way to trigger the auto land. I'm just surprised the failsafe was to autoland instead of auto self destruct. I suppose the spoofed GPS coordinates made it think it was in America or something, hence the autoland. I just can't believe they would overlook such a relatively cheap and easy defensive measure.
For your guys sake I hope they at least don't use a hardcoded encryption key for the control signals, and change it on every single mission. Else before you know it your entire fleet of drones can be turned against you. Imagine the chaos.
Close but not exactly.
What? It's a perfectly valid scenario /if/ they used hardcoded encryption keys for the control signals.
I know but couldn't resist. Not familiar w/ all that military jargon but I thought of the movie when you said 'for your sake'/'imagine the chaos'.
interesting. then i saw the guy who said it has no major role in iran's policy that would most directl affect thisTEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's official news agency on Tuesday quoted a top official as saying Iran will close the Strait of Hormuz, cutting off oil exports, if the West imposes sanctions on Iran's oil shipments.
According to the IRNA report Tuesday Vice President Mohamed Reza Rahimi said Iran does not want hostilities but charged that the West continues its plots against Iran.
The West is considering limiting Iran's oil trade over its disputed nuclear program. Some 80 percent of Iran's foreign revenue comes from oil exports.
In Washington, State Department spokesman Mark Toner called the threat "bluster." He said it was "another attempt by them to distract attention from the real issue, which is their continued noncompliance with international nuclear obligations."
Rahimi has no major role in Iran's foreign or military policy.
Iran is conducting a 10-day naval maneuver in the area the of the Strait of Hormuz, where about 40 percent of the world's oil supply passes. Closing the strait would have immense world economic impact.
where do the brown people get the technology? surely they cant build it in their huts and pyramids
Yeah right they'd do something like that lol. Go ahead and hold a third of the world's oil supply essentially hostage and see how fast you get your shit pushed in by everyone taking their turns.

I really liked this documentary, check it out.
It'd be unfortunate if we invaded/had a war.
Well, looks like Iran is now subject to the USA's "Punish 'dem damn terrorists" laws now.

.TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — Iran's navy chief says his country can easily close the strategic Strait of Hormuz at the mouth of the Persian Gulf, the passageway through which a sixth of the world's oil flows.
Adm. Habibollah Sayyari told state-run Press TV Wednesday that the navy is in control of the vital waterway and can readily block it. It was the second such warning from a senior official in two days.
Vice President Mohamed Reza Rahimi threatened Tuesday that Iran will close the strait, cutting off oil exports, if the West imposes sanctions on Iranian oil shipments to punish Tehran for its nuclear program, which the west suspects is aimed at making weapons.
