the actual death is insignificant as de facto control of North Korea had already been taken from Kim Il Jung on account of his failing health, most likely by his brother-in-law Chang Sung-taek, the vice-president of North Korea's dictatorial governing body (Kim was the president).
the stated successor Kim Jong Un is in his 20s, foreign educated, and reportedly disrespected by the politburo + military leadership. we'll see how uncle feels about his nephew assuming the reigns, or if either can maintain power against the aspiring non-bloodline claimants to the throne.
i doubt South Korea has much to worry about however, any of the potential North Korean leaders must know it is suicide to attack such a close ally of the west; the intrigue and long knives will likely be kept north of the DMZ.
it could get quite ugly, there are too many pieces in the game.
