    360 disc tray slowly dying?

My 360 disc tray has started acting up in the last couple of weeks. Every few days the disc tray will not open either from the button on the front or from the menu open tray option unless I try it several times. This is one of the older white models.

My question is two-fold: Is there anything I can try to do to fix this? If it does become completely borked in the future and refuses to open, could I just go out and buy one of the cheapo arcade models and pop my current HDD into it with no problems, or is that shit all console coded? Thanks.

Not sure about fixing it, but you can definitely replace it. It is console coded, but you can connect it to a pc, dump the console code, and flash it into a new drive.

You can trade in your console at a place like GameStop and use the credit toward a new Xbox 360 S. They don't take HDDs as part of the trade-in, so you can keep yours at home. You won't need a new HDD, either.

To be a little more specific, you should purchase the cheapest 360 S model. It doesn't have a HDD, but it does have 4GB of on-board flash storage. That's the one you referred to. You'll be transplanting your old Xbox 360 HDD into a new casing, such as this one:

    http://www.amazon.com/Hard-Disk-Driv...4289000&sr=8-1

If you have Amazon Prime or plan to use their Free Super Saver Shipping, check the other sellers, as at least one of them should have their orders fulfilled through Amazon. If you can't find one in that listing, search around Amazon using slightly different keywords, as there are many merchandise listings for the same product.

Besides that, you'll also need a Torx 6 and a Torx 10. These are incredibly cheap. You can get a set at a place like Home Depot that's less than $7, or you can turn to Amazon once again:

Lastly, you'll have to go through the incredibly simple transplant procedure:

Then just slide it into your new Xbox 360 S, and you're done. You don't need to modify the HDD's contents in any way whatsoever.

Also, if you want to transfer your Xbox Live content licensing to the new system:

Wow, that looks incredibly simple and cheap to do. Thanks a ton!

This is something I did recently, so I am glad to help. Besides the links provided previously, here's another set that includes the torx bits you need, but it's also higher rated:

    http://www.amazon.com/SE-pcs-Torx-Ph...4339689&sr=8-3

I hadn't really noticed the previous set's rating, and it seems some people had trouble with it. I'm sure you'll be fine if you already got it, but if not, there's another option.

If you want to keep looking around Amazon, people likely sell the torx screwdrivers you need separately and cheaply, too, if you want to go that route instead.

When my disc tray went out, I just called up customer service and told them it red ringed, automatic new box once you send yours back in.
