I hope they hire whoever does their music, .hack series always has the best ost out of any game I've played.

Seriously, as if the poor kid hasn't been through enough already. Not only was he data drained and put into a coma so bad that he gets amnesia, but his pseudo-girlfriend ended up in a 6-month+ long coma too while he ends up having to save the world *again*.

Maybe it's something like the Legend of the Twilight series where some other kid is given a special edition Haseo Character Model or something. I just finished GU and there's no reason for him to be back at first form. It wouldn't really make much sense for the new game to take place during Roots either since that timeline is pretty fleshed out already. That looks like R:2 though, so it doesn't seem like there's another huge time lapse between this and Roots/GU.

I don't get it. What more could they possibly put that kid through?

Kajiura only did Sign/Liminality, the two animu that tied into World R:1, Chiyako Fukuda has done most of the work for the series. Unless they've gone MIA I don't see why they wouldn't work on this too.

.hack//sign is definitely worth watching before the first 4 games. Roots is optional, since the main characters are the same and the important parts of the story are sorta explained at the beginning of the GU games anyways. The first 4 got really repetitive by the 4th game, but I enjoyed the GU games. It's a new "Version" of The World, so the combat system and such got a complete overhaul. It's a lot more active than the older games. If you played Star Ocean: TTEOT, the battle system is pretty similar to that except that you can't swap to other characters.

Your main character in GU gets access to different weapon types eventually, though. You're not just a twin blade the whole time. As you progress through the games, you start with twin blades and eventually get access to broadswords (two-handed), scythes, and dual guns (not a standard weapon for any other class).

I think it's worth playing.

Holy shit I didn't even realize Sora was Haseo. That explains so fucking much. And why I liked Haseo as a protagonist way better than Kite, because when I watched Signs I always thought Sora was a BAMF.

Yeah, same kid. Went from 10 years old to 17 between Sign and GU, but because he was fucked up so badly by Skeith at the end of Sign he ended up forgetting that he ever played The World in the first place. He doesn't remember being Sora, or being a badass, or anything. He's just naturally awesome and the .hack// universe seems to enjoy kicking the shit out of him on a regular basis.

Haseo (aka Sora) was the first real hero of the .hack// universe. He was the first player to intentionally infiltrate Code Morganna, and the first to battle (and fall) against the Phases of the Cursed Wave. Tsukasa's company battled Twilight Guardians, but they never directly fought against Phase One (Skeith) or Phase Four (Macha), who ended up being data drained and reconstructed as Mia anyways.

If anything, Tsukasa et al weren't really heroes at all. Tsukasa was the first victim of Morganna, and her friends helped save her, but afterwards they completely ignored the danger presented by the awakened Cursed Wave. Tsukasa and Subaru quit the game, and while Bear, Crim, and Mimiru still played they did not take part in any of the events that took place in Infection-Quarantine despite being some of the only people to fully appreciate just how dangerous Morganna was.
