Honda still using 60k drivetrain warranties in 2011 is laughable. GL with that auto tranny dropping out @ 60,001 with no recall in sight just like the 2011 models are plagued for (Honda is still using the same garbage 5-speed auto). Kia being next in line in terms of bad rep.
The other two models are perfectly fine in terms of drivetrain quality.
Seriously, no. Those rebadged Daewoos are horrible. Trust me, I've had the displeasure of driving some. Anything (yes, even a *shudder* Peugeot) but one of those.
Only problem is Honda hasn't made a good Civic since 05 and never will again :/
I miss the old days when Honda had all the immortal Civics, Accords and fucking 2001 Prelude Type-SH(es) rolling around. Ahh.. Prelude, the one car that got away.![]()
gdi double >.<
I got a shitbox, 2002 Elantra that was rebuilt out of three crashed ones by this tiny Polish bodyshop. I took pretty bad care of it for the first few years so it makes all kinds of random noises, the seals came loose on the doors so every time it rains moisture gets in the car, the interior has all kinds of water damage and in the winter I get frost on the inside of my windshield. I hate cars.
Read more articles, then, if that's what you believe.
Buy new or certified pre-owned, or find some kindly grandma that lives in a beach town in a condo and is selling her 6-year-old vehicle that only has around 20k miles on it because she only drives to the store, the church, and the bake sale. Those deals are the best deals.
It was $5k in 2004 and the guy was married to a girl who worked at State Farm Bank that was able to fudge paperwork saying I had full coverage insurance(required for financing a car in IL) when I could only afford liability, I don't really have any regrets buying it. Even the rebuilds have to get certified by the state, they did a fine job I just dislike dealing with cars and took shitty care of it for several years, lol.
reason I say avoid rebuilds is a lot of times if a car gets hit in the area of the engine, that engine is basically fucked forever. It only takes one little shift somewhere in the parts to cause engine problems that no one is ever going to be able to find.
I've experienced this twice. First was my parent's car which they bought as a rebuilt, and it always had engine issues. Second was my saturn station wagon that wasn't a rebuild, BUT it was hit by a stupid teenager and no matter what money I put into it, it was never the same since. ;_; I loved that car too.
[edit] I know you didn't mention any trouble like that btw, just pointing out that it's really risky, and usually better to avoid purchasing in the future.
Yeah it was just something done in a pinch, but I believe part of the state certification is that it has to be body damage only, and they have to disclose what came from where. Probably the only thing bad from the rebuilding itself is that they used kind of a knockoff version of the paint Hyundai uses, it matches in color but the pant has peeled off of several spots on the roof/hood.
2001 Mistsubishi Mirage ES .. amazingly dependable car even though it is nearing the end of its life. Since i got it in late '06 the only major problem has been my AC breaking which i couldnt get fixed. Other then that its been normal stuff.. new brakes, new tires. A hood hinge did break early Dec and i have the part to replace it, just need to.
Mazda 3, in any form.
I drove a 2007 Civic before my current Speed3, and I never had any issues with it whatsoever (well, aside from getting rear-ended, but that's genuinely not my fault). Compared to the state of competition in 2007, it was still one of the best options, and most of the complaints levied against it at the time were around the space-pod looks and bi-level dash.
Since then, everyone has stepped up their game and Honda hasn't. I wouldn't buy one new today, but then again, the short list would really only be the Mazda 3 as the new Skyactiv models combine very decent economy with a very willing, fun-to-drive chassis and a great set of features/options.
Edit: In full disclosure, my wife drives a Mazda3 2.5L hatch, I drive a Speed3, and every time one of my friends buys a new car, they also seem to wind up with 3s too. I am absolutely biased, but if you enjoy driving at all, or just want the best economy hatch (or one of the best economy sedans) on the market, there is really only 1 choice.
Minor bump.
Bought this last week (04 330ci):
And sold my old car within a day of posting it on craigslist (98 328i):
