It was impossible to throw for 5,000 yards back then. Only two other 1984 QBs cracked 4,000 yards (Neil Lomax and Phil Simms); nobody else cracked 3,800 yards; and only five guys even attempted 500+ passes (Marino's 564 was the highest).
So...people weren't throwing nearly as frequently, but it was impossible to do so back then?

Shit logic. Has YPA really changed much since then?

Nope, when you look at the single-season YPA leaders, you see players from every era. The only thing different now is that people throw more frequently, they aren't particularly more successful throwing now.

    http://www.pro-football-reference.co...gle_season.htm

26 times has a player thrown for 9.0 YPA or higher. Marino's 1984 was one of them.

Only 3 of those 26 seasons were in the 2000's. (Rodgers '11, Peyton's '04, and Warner's '00). It was done twice in the 90's, four times in the 80's, twice in the 70's.

As many people had a 9.0+ YPA season between 1980-1989 as did between 1990-2010. If anything the 80's were the aberration.

It was impossible because no one attempted enough passes to do it. Makes sense to me.

Well if defenses are gonna let Brees throw for over 300 yards when he's not even running up the score in most of those games, why the hell would you make him STOP throwing? He's had only 3 games below 300 yards this season, and alot of his high yardage games were losses, like his 400yd loss against the Packers Week 1. They have the ability to run the ball but he's extremely accurate this season.

tldr, if you want Brees to not throw the ball, stop him, otherwise stand there and watch

Then whine about him breaking records and having a speech for his team mates thanking them for helping him break the record.

Sounds like stupid coaching, not "the rules of the era" or whatever other dumb shit people try to excuse it with. It's not like it took an 11 YPA season from Marino to get there, he got there cause he threw way more than everyone else, just like how Brees did it.

You're right, the rule changes have had no effect. It was just as easy to pass back then as it is now, the coaches were just retarded.

I don't want to believe that necessarily, the rule changes should make it easier, but top-end YPA sure isn't showing any sort of pattern that would lead me to believe that.

I wasn't watching football back then(obviously) so I can't really say for sure. But from what I hear/read, West Coast offenses were lest prevalent and the downfield passing game(Air Coryell) was more common. Also easier to maintain a high YPA on fewer pass attempts.

Yes, I think back then you had lower completion percentages and higher yards per catch (teams threw deep more) which is why the highest YPA seasons are back in the 30's/40's (Otto Graham and Sid Luckman). Even Marino's epic '84 season he only had a 64.8% completion rate. So yeah I guess while YPA was roughly the same, passing now is more "reliable" because of higher top-end completion %.

...although 2 of the top 5 completion percentage seasons of all time were...also in the 1980's.

I averaged 63YPA in high school back when passing was hard. These new QBs are spoiled.
